News about the public middle school coming to DUMBO

Within the PS 307 and PS 8 rezoning proposal, the Department of Education (DOE) has announced that Satellite West Middle School, currently located on the 3rd floor of the PS 307 building for 6th to 8th grade, will be moving to the new middle school at 60 Water Street in DUMBO.

The new public middle school being built at 60 Water Street also known as “Dock Street building” will accommodate 333 students and feature an indoor gym with basketball court, a science lab and demo room, and a uniquely designed music suite with a classroom, practice cubicles and music storeroom. The second floor of the building will be exclusively used for the middle school with 15 full-size class rooms.

The DOE plans, if the proposal is approved, to re-site Satellite West middle school that has currently around 86 students enrolled, in the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year. This new middle school will draw students from all over district 13.

If approved, the move of Satellite West middle school will free up the 3rd floor in the PS 307 building on York Street. PS 307 has approximately 371 students enrolled currently. Per the 2013-2014 Bluebook, the building is programmed for a capacity of 776 students which means PS 307 will be able to add on around 360 students in this building during the next years.

There will be a public hearing for this proposal in the Satellite West building on 209 York Street on November 2, 2015 at 6 PM. This proposal will be voted on on November 19, 2015 at the Panel meeting which will take place at 6:00 pm at M.S. 131 located at 100 Hester Street, New York.
