Open seats for dual language programs at un-zoned public school PS 133

PS 133 located at 610 Baltic Street in Gowanus is a public un-zoned “choice” elementary school that draws 1/3 of its students from District 13 and 2/3 from District 15. The school that moved to a brand new building in 2013 offers French and Spanish Dual Language Programs where they follow the 50/50 model of instruction, where children receive 50% of instruction in English, and 50% of instruction in either French or Spanish. The overall goal of their DLP program is for all students to be bilingual, bi-literate, and bi-cultural.

For Pre-K and Kindergarten the Department of Education assigns seats via lottery within the online application on their site. For 1st grade and up, new students are only accepted into the Dual Language Programs if they speak the target language fluently. The school has seats available for the following grades:

  • Grade 1 – Native Spanish, Native French, General Education
  • Grade 2 – Native Spanish, General Education
  • Grade 3 – Native Spanish, General Education
  • Grade 4 – Native Spanish, Native French, General Education

All students not in the Dual Language Programs but in the General Education classes (two classes per grade) learn Spanish starting in Kindergarten. All classes in all grades have weekly cluster classes including science in the science lab, music in the music room, drama & theater, arts, physical education and more. Find out more about their curriculum here.

The school currently has over 760 students enrolled and growing. School hours are from 8.20 am to 2.40 pm. Three different after school programs are available. There is a school bus service from both districts (i.e. school bus from Cadman Plaza leaving 7.45 am and coming back 3 pm for Kindergarten and up). It is a non-mandatory school uniform school. The schools sets aside around 30% of seats to students that qualify for free lunch and English Language Learners. Siblings have priority into the school.

The school will be open for registration to new families the week of August 28 to September 1. Prospective parents can contact the parent coordinator Mr. Dickerson [email protected] or Literacy Coach/DLP Coordinator Dalila Rabsatt [email protected] for more information.
