PS 8 Kindergarten wait list update fall 2017

PS 8 in Brooklyn Heights has filled 5 Kindergarten classes with 25 students in each class, adding up to 125 Kindergarten students this school year. The school will not add a 6th Kindergarten class due to its overcrowding.

When the waitlist was first published in March, it had 22 students waitlisted. However, there might have been more students added to the wait list during the spring and summer when families who just moved into the zone registered their children for Kindergarten after the deadline.

At a parent meet-up at PS 8 last week, the parent coordinator told families that one single spot had opened up in K and it has been taken by a child on the wait list.

Students on the wait list were offered spots at PS 307 in Vinegar Hill if they hadn’t put down other schools with open spots on their application.

Due to the amount of young families living in the PS 8 zone, the grand-fathering of DUMBO siblings and ongoing residential development in the PS 8 zone, a Kindergarten wait list of this or a similar size might be the new state-of-affairs for families applying to Kindergarten at PS 8.

In-zone families wait-listed will be able to reapply for 1st Grade as there might be students dropping out after Kindergarten and the class size could be increased to up to 32 students assuming the school will be able to keep five 1st Grade classes.
