Recap from the rezoning implementation meeting 5/5

Around 25 people including the PS 8 and PS 307 principals, the District 13 Superintendent, CEC 13 members, staff from the Department of Education, PS 307 parents as well as prospective parents and writers from local news outlets gathered at the District’s office to discuss the implementation of the PS 307 and PS 8 rezoning on May 5th.

PS 307 principal Stephanie Carroll shared at the meeting that the school has partnered up with Apple Seeds, a social research and analysis firm that helps promote diverse classrooms. The school has a new website with digital newsletter and social media presence to keep everybody in the community up-to-date. PS 307 is also working on a socio-economic integration grant and events at the school open to the general public (stay tuned for more details about their spring concert on June 2nd). The school is launching a monthly free mommy & me event for 2 to 3 year olds with guardians starting in May – more details here. The principal also addressed the upcoming expansion of the school to the 3rd floor where they will have more classrooms, possibly a sensory room and a family resource center. PS 307 and PS 8 are collaborating closely and will have inter-visitations of 1st grade teachers this spring.

PS 307 has made 66 offers to in-zone kids for Kindergarten and 97 for Pre-K. Numbers of students registered for those grades have not yet been published.

PS 8 has 125 kids registered and one child on the waitlist. Principal Seth Phillips expects to have 5 Kindergarten classes next school year and nobody left on the wait list.
