Update on short-term solutions to address PS 8 overcrowding

Below is the outcome of the January PTA meeting regarding the PS 8 school capacity issue. Short-term solutions the Department of Education may consider to address the problem for fall 2015:

PROPOSED SOLUTION #1 – Take no immediate action and enroll 6 Kindergarten classes to accommodate the maximum number of zoned children, despite the fact that we only have 3 fifth grade classes graduating and no unoccupied classrooms.

PROPOSED SOLUTION #2 – Move rising 5th grades over to Westinghouse – the site of the middle school.

PROPOSED SOLUTION #3 – Limit Kindergarten enrollment to 5 classes and offer alternative placements to those put on a waitlist.

PROPOSED SOLUTION #4 – Find and lease (via the DOE) additional space in the immediate vicinity of the lower school.

PROPOSED SOLUTION #5 – Erect trailers in the school yard to serve as additional 1-2 classrooms.
