Free kid-friendly events in August

A breastfeeding fiesta, garden party, Hindu lamp ceremony, outdoor movies and more free events for the whole family will take place in August:

Breastfeeding Fiesta: Partying For a Milky Purpose | 8/2 | Prospect Park Zoo

In partnership with Maimonides Medical Center, healthfirst and By My Side/healthy start Brooklyn, Prospect Park Zoo is hosting a breastfeeding awareness event during National Breastfeeding Awareness week. The event will showcase health care services available in our community to give families the best possible start. August 2 from 2 to 5 pm by Prospect Park Zoo, more informaion here.

Apple-Tree Pruning Event | 8/4 | Brooklyn Heights

Join neighbors and friends in the Poplar Street Community Garden for our annual Apple-Tree Pruning event on Saturday, August 4th, noon-3 pm. Learn about fruit trees and their care, gain hands-on experience with pruning tools, climb ladders and/or help spot other climbers. Enjoy the Garden and maybe even pick some fresh apples! This event is ideal for adults and children 8 years and older.

Hindu Lamp Ceremony | 8/4 | DUMBO

Decorate your own palm leaf lamp and release it in the East River as part of the traditional Aarti ceremony for peace and harmony. Audience members are also invited to join in the traditional percussion ensemble. Saturday, August 4, at 4pm at the main street beach in DUMBO.

International Day of Friendship celebration | 8/5 | Downtown Brooklyn

Starting at 1:00 PM on Sunday, August 5th, the Unity Parade of Flags will bring the colorful flags of 195 countries marching down Fulton Mall in Downtown Brooklyn culminating at Brooklyn Borough Hall. the celebration will feature an array of international performances, a first-ever Global Dance Party, as well as a taste of ethnic cuisine at a variety of food trucks.  are also bringing back our popular Global Village, providing attendees with the opportunity to feel, hear, see, and touch many cultures from around the world in an interactive and meaningful way.

Summer Reading Storytime | Pier 3 | Wednesdays 

Join The Brooklyn Public Library for a rollicking good time listening to stories, singing songs, and enjoying the breeze from the water! Wednesdays 8/1 and 8/8 at 10:30 am at Pier 3 in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Live Under The Archway | DUMBO | Thursdays 

Fifteen Weeks of free concerts and events held on Thursdays at 6pm under the Manhattan Bridge Archway in DUMBO. Kids can run around while parents have a glass of wine listening to live music.

Movies with a View | Brooklyn Bridge Park | Thursdays

Movies With A View takes place every Thursday evening in August at the Harbor View Lawn at Pier 1. Music starts at 6 pm, movie begins at sundown. Burgers, frites, crab cakes, pizza, ice cream, beer, and wine from Smorgasburg will be available all night long on the promenade! Lots of kid-friendly movies including Wayne’s World and Wonder Woman. More information here.

Movies at 300 Ashland | Downtown Brooklyn | Tuesdays

Who doesn’t love a peek behind the showbiz curtain? These films follow love and laughter in 1920’s Hollywood, struggling actors trying to break into the film industry, a cartoon rabbit in WAY over his head, and teenagers looking for fame. Curated by BAMcinématek. Tuesdays in August starting 8/7 at 7 pm at 300 Ashland Place at the corner of Lafayette Ave & Flatbush Ave. More information here.
