International Charter School of New York plans new K-8 building near the Navy Yard

International Charter School of New York (ICS) is a District 13 Charter School that currently serves 350 students from Kindergarten to 4th Grade in Downtown Brooklyn. The school that opened in 2015 has two locations due to space issues – one at 55 Willoughby Street and one at 9 Hanover Place. The school’s many year long search for a permanent home offering Kindergarten to 8th Grade seems to come to an end with the lease of 30 Clinton Avenue near the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Permits have been filed to build a 5-story building featuring 50,000 square feet of space and a yard according to a press release. If approved, International Charter School plans to open the new school building in the fall of 2021 with 725 seats.

Charter Schools are tuition-free, admit students who live in a District by lottery and most Charter Schools set aside 40-50% of seats to students who qualify for free lunch to guarantee a diverse student body.

Community Board 2 will hold a land use committee public hearing on Wednesday 3/20 at 6 pm at NYU Tandon School of Engineering, Dibner Building, Room LC400 at 5 Metrotech Center to discuss the application:

“IN THE MATTER OF an application filed at the Board of Standards and Appeals on behalf of 30 Clinton LLC, as owner, and the International Charter School, as lessee, for a special permit pursuant to Section 73-19 of the Zoning Resolution to allow a Use Group 3 school at 30 Clinton Avenue (Block 1872, Lots 44, 48 and 49), in an M1-2 zoning district, in the Borough of Brooklyn.”
