The Department of Education has sent out Kindergarten offer letters for children born in 2014. Families can log-in to their account online to see their child’s placement.
Just 229 Kindergarten applicants in New York City were placed on waitlists this year, compared to 590 a year ago according to Chalkbeat. PS 8 in Brooklyn Heights, PS 29 in Cobble Hill and PS 58 in Carroll Gardens were able to offer seats to all in-zone students that applied on time. PS 20 in Fort Greene and PS 9 in Prospect Heights had 5 or fewer students waitlisted.
Offers have to be accepted by May 3rd, 2019. If your child took the Gifted & Talented (G&T) test, you will get your test results in a separate letter in mid-April.
For families who were wait listed at their 1st choice:
- Follow-up with the parent coordinator at the schools of your choice about your number on their wait list
- Be patient as there will be lots of movement on wait lists over the next few months and during the summer. G&T placements will come out, Charter school lotteries will be held, families will move or choose private schools.
- Keep in mind that many schools in our neighborhood do not take out-of-zone students in general due to overcrowding including PS 8, PS 29 and PS 58. If you do not live in their school zone, they will not offer you a spot.
