Public school news: Changes to school closures after Covid exposure, update on State tests

The City has created new school closure rules that will go into effect on Monday 4/12.

  • If there are 2 or 3 detected Covid cases in a school in a week, the school will NOT close but increased testing to 40% to staff and students in that school will be provided
  • If there are 4 or more cases in the school in 7 days, the school (not the entire school building) will be closed for 10 days
  • Schools DON’T close for 24 h anymore while investigations are ongoing
  • Individual classrooms where a Covid case has been detected will continue to be quarantined for 10 days

State tests for Grades 3 to 8 will be optional and families must sign-up to actually take the tests this year. Read more here.

Over 65,000 staff members in public schools are now vaccinated. Of all the cases in DOE schools since October, for 70% of cases the “index case” in the school was an adult.

Furthermore, the mayor reconfirmed his commitment that all students will be able to come back to school five days a week in September for the new school year.
