Update on the planned public middle school in the Pacific Park project in Downtown Bklyn

District 13 will get a new middle school which might be called M.S. One Brooklyn. Construction of the 640-seat school at the formerly Atlantic Yards now called Pacific Park at 664 Pacific Street could start in 2019 and finish in June 2021, despite a history of delays.

A recent post on the web site of MS One Brooklyn backers, Construction of middle school at Atlantic Yards currently set to begin July 2019, states: “Since the time of the January 2016 announcement that the DOE facility at Atlantic Yards will be a middle school, the anticipated construction schedule has shifted, with the developer Greenland Forest City Partners at various times citing factors such as the change in the New York State 421a tax abatement, and the need to negotiate a license agreement with a neighboring property for access. According to the most recent (FY2015-2019) Capital Plan for the New York City School Construction Authority, construction is now expected to begin in July 2019, with an estimated completion date of June 2021. The school is listed on page C8 of the Capital Plan as I.S. 653, with a capacity of 640 seats.

Read more about the timeline of the planned school on ATLANTIC YARDS/PACIFIC PARK REPORT, a watchdog blog, by journalist Norman Oder, that offers analysis, commentary, and reportage about the $4.9B project to build the Barclays Center arena and 15-16 towers at a crucial site in Brooklyn. Dubbed Atlantic Yards by developer Forest City Ratner in 2003, it was rebranded Pacific Park Brooklyn in 2014 after the Chinese government-owned Greenland Group bought a 70% stake going forward. As of 2018, after the arena and four towers were built, Greenland owns 95% of future construction.
