Where to Play in Brooklyn: Board Games

Looking for places the whole family can play? We’re kicking off our new Where to Play in Brooklyn series with board game spots to help you engage in a little friendly competition. Here are the best places to check out some new games or play some old favorites – from Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO, to Greenpoint, Boerum Hill, Park Slope, Sunset Park, and Bath Beach!

Brooklyn Strategist | Brooklyn Heights

Brooklyn Strategist is a community board game store with a cafe, a huge library of over 500 games, and walk-in play. They recently moved to their new location on Pierrepont Street in Brooklyn Heights. Children 11 and older are welcome to play independently with friends in a supervised environment. Walk-in play is $15 per person for 4 hours. They are open 9:00am-11:00pm Monday through Saturday and 9:00am-8:00pm on Sundays.

Brooklyn Game Knight | Industry City | Sunset Park

Brooklyn Game Knight is a tabletop lounge with an epic selection of over 350 board games, card games, RPGs, and miniature battles. They double as a retail store, and have become a community hub for gaming, with regular events and tournaments. It costs just $12 per person to access their full library and play for up to 4 hours. Families also have the option to borrow and return games if they want to play in one of the courtyards in Industry City! Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. They are open 3:30pm-10:00pm Tuesday-Friday and 2:00pm-10:00pm  on Saturday and Sunday.

Sip & Play | Park Slope

Sip & Play has over 300 board games for families to play as well as delicious boba, drinks, and snacks! Pricing is $10 per person Monday-Thursday and $12/person Friday-Sunday. If you’d like to reserve in advance, the cost is $15 per person. Sessions are 3 hours. They are open Monday-Thursday 11:00am-11:00pm, Friday 11:00am-12:00am, Saturday 10:00am-12:00am, and Sunday 10:00am-11:00pm.

Next Move Cafe | Bath Beach

Next Move Cafe has plenty of board games for players of all ages. Serving bubble tea as well as other drinks and food, this is the perfect spot to try some new games. The cost is $12 per person on weekdays and $15 per person Friday-Sunday. Sessions are four hours. They are open on weekdays from 2:00pm-12:00am, Fridays and Saturdays from 12:00pm-1:00am, and Sundays from 12:00pm-12:00am.

Squarrel Cafe | Boerum Hill

Stop by this cafe by Atlantic Center to play for either $8 per person for 3 hours or $15 per person for all day fun! Check out their game library here. They are open Monday and Tuesday 9:00am-6:00pm, Wednesday 9:00am-11:00pm, and Thursday-Sunday 9:00am-10:00pm. They take reservations!

3rd Place from the Sun | DUMBO

3rd Place from the Sun is DUMBO’s first dedicated board game and Dungeons & Dragons spot, featuring 300 games and private themed rooms designed for immersive D&D sessions, complete with lighting effects and a sound system. Best for 7 and up, and ages 11+ can play without an adult. Drop-in hours are Wednesday-Monday from 12:00pm-10:00pm except for Sundays when they close at 8:00pm. Play is $15 per person for up to two hours, with children 10 and under $10 each.

Last Place on Earth | Greenpoint

Last Place on Earth is a board game hub and a gathering place for Dungeons & Dragons players. They also have a location in DUMBO called 3rd Place from the Sun. Play is $15 per person for up to two hours, with children 10 and under $10 each. Drop-in hours are Wednesday-Monday from 12:00pm-10:00pm except for Sundays when they close at 8:00pm.

Brooklyn Public Library | Various locations

Brooklyn Public Library often hosts free board game events. They also have a Board Game Library with hundreds of games to borrow for fun at home! Patrons can borrow three games at a time for three weeks each. Currently only the following libraries offer board game borrowing: Adams Street, Bedford, Bushwick, Central, Clarendon, Crown Heights, Greenpoint, Jamaica Bay, Macon, McKinley Park, Midwood, Mill Basin, New Utrecht and Windsor Terrace.
