In 2012, PS 8 was approved to expand to include a middle school located at Westinghouse High School on Johnson Street in Downtown Brooklyn and had its second class of 8th graders at MS 8 graduating in 2016.
Principal Seth Phillips, who has been the principal of both campuses, will be mostly present at the middle school as of next school year 2016/2017 and a new assistant principal will join the lower school. The school is expanding from three to four 6th Grade classes this coming school year.
A large former science room is being renovated and rebuilt as a science lab and an adjacent art room which will open in February 2017. Within the new initiative by the Department of Education “Algebra for all”, MS 8 is rolling out four years of math in three years this fall.
MS 8 gives priority to PS 8 students. It is a “limited unscreened school” which means additional open spots are assigned by lottery to students in District 13. School tours will be available in the fall, details on the school’s website.
