The Department of Education plans to expand the zone of elementary public school PS 32 in Carroll Gardens which currently serves 500 students in Grades Pre-K to 5th Grade. The school is located in District 15. The school with rather small class sizes is exceptionally diverse with 8% Asian, 23 % black, 24% Hispanic and 40% white students. The school offers a Gifted and Talented as well as an ASD Nest program. 66% of students met state standards in English and 60% in Math in last year’s NY State exams which is above city and District level. Students in all grades receive weekly instruction in arts, science, music and dance in assigned cluster rooms. School hours are 8.20 am to 2.40 pm.
The school’s annex which will be connected to the existing building is under construction and is scheduled to open in September 2020. The new building which will be connected to the old building will have capacity for 400 students and feature a roof top playground. No details on which grades will be moved to annex and other amenities have been published at this point but both buildings combined will be serving up to 900 students. The school plans to expand their Pre-K program which currently runs 2 Pre-K classes with each 18 students and plans to add a general education class for each grade after the opening of the additional building.

No details of the proposed zoning changes have been published, however, we expect the zones of PS 29 in Cobble Hill and PS 58 in Carroll Gardens to be reduced if the zone change gets approved by the CEC15. Both PS 29 and PS 58 have been overcrowded and have experienced Kindergarten wait lists in the last years. These zoning changes could get implemented for school year 2020/2021 when the new building at PS 32 opens up. Similar to the rezoning of PS 8 and PS 307, we anticipate that this rezoning will not affect students already in school at PS 29 and PS 58 or younger siblings of those students.
