A godmother of the fairy variety inquires of her two helpers about the neediest case in the kingdom. Not surprisingly, they introduce her to Ella, who, after being orphaned, was left in the care of her wicked stepmother and stepsisters. Forced to use the kitchen as a bedroom, Ella can often be found daydreaming among the cinders from the fireplace, inspiring her stepfamily to rename her “Cinderella.” Wand in hand, Godmother sets about to change the girl’s life. In this moving dance performance from acclaimed choreographer Hope Boykin, a young girl named Clover is told by her mom that it isn’t safe to cross the fence that segregates their African-American side of town from the white side where her neighbor Anna lives. But when the two girls become friends, they find a clever way to get around the grown-up rules together. Twenty years after its first publication, Jacqueline Woodson’s powerful picture book The Other Side comes to life on stage in an enthralling program of dance about overcoming the barriers that keep us apart. This stirring historical musical—adapted from Jacqueline Woodson’s acclaimed children’s book—pays tribute to the women in Woodson’s own family whose strength and knowledge have illuminated their daughters’ lives over seven generations.
Soonie shares the story of how her great-grandma was just seven years old when she was sold to a big plantation without her parents. With only some fabric and needles to call her own, she began to stitch a Show Way: a quilt with secret meanings to show enslaved people the way to freedom. As each generation passes, the quilt sheds light on the past and paves the road into the future, stitching together possibility and promise.

The 2024 BMS Middle School Jazz Festival will include performances by guest artist and fabulous trumpet player Terell Stafford with the Brooklyn Music School Jazz Faculty, the Ocean Hill Collegiate Charter School Jazz Band, Brooklyn Friends Middle School Jazz Ensemble, Salute to Music All-City Middle School Jazz Band, NEST+M Middle School Jazz Band, and the Berkeley Carrol Middle School Jazz Bands. 3. Wearable Art with Brooklyn FAM at Brooklyn Children’s Museum

Join BCM for a series of art activities to engage with the Brooklyn FAM: Festival of Arts and Music public art exhibit, currently on view at three locations in the Museum. Each event will be led by the lead artist for each of the three projects on view. Through personal reflection and hands-on crafting, kids and families will be able to create wearable art that carries meaning into their daily lives and sparks new connections with others.

The Bay Ridge Saint Patrick’s Day Parade was the brain child of the late Gene Reilly in 1994, owner of the former Lief Erickson Pub on 5th Avenue. He wanted to share the Celtic culture and love of Irish Heritage. He believed there was a need and desire for this, and always room for one more parade in New York City.
9. Celebrate Holi with Brooklyn Conservatory of Music in Prospect Park

Join Mixed Masala and BKCM in celebrating Holi, the Festival of Colors, on Sunday, March 24 at Prospect Park! The celebration begins at 3pm with picnicking and live music at Long Meadow (near Grand Army Plaza). Bring a blanket and snacks and enjoy the free concert. At 4pm the music will change its tune and attendees will be invited to join in the traditional celebration of throwing colored powder. We recommend that you wear white clothing and expect to get messy! BKCM is selling colored powder for $6 per packet for families to pick up at the event. To ensure that your colored powder order is processed, purchase by Wednesday, March 20!

PLAYTOPIA: A World of Fun with Summer Camps at Pier 57 in Chelsea
Sunday, March 17 | 11am-3pm
Discover and play with dozens of summer camps and activities at PLAYTOPIA, presented by Nory and hosted by Mommy Poppins and Brooklyn Bridge Parents. Free activities include arts & crafts, STEM and robotics, games, collaborative sculpture build, face painting, games, and more. The magic shows will take place at 12 pm and 1 pm (each 30 minutes). Located indoors at beautiful Pier 57 in Chelsea, with Market 57 Food Hall, and adjacent to Little Island. It’s going to be a world of fun!
