Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, which means a full day of costumes, parades and candy with no school-night bedtime looming. Our annual Halloween Guide rounds up free, family-friendly fall fun and spooktacular events across Brooklyn. Organizers are still announcing their October plans, so we will keep adding events as they are confirmed — check back often! Halloween Costume Swap | Fort Greene

Bring a Halloween costume your child has outgrown and take a different one home in its place, free either way. The swap covers kids and adults and costumes of all ages, and the organisers pitch it as a way to save money and keep a wearable costume out of the bin. The flyer names the venue as the Brooklyn Compass at the Camel Park playground.

Pumpkin Point | Governors Island

Governors Island’s annual pumpkin patch returns to Nolan Park for both days of the weekend, and picking a pumpkin costs nothing — one per person per household, so bring your own tote bag to carry it home. Costumes are encouraged, and the historic houses around Nolan Park hand out treats on both days, as supplies last. Island food vendors sell fall snacks and drinks on site. It runs rain or shine. The weekend Brooklyn ferry from Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park and from Red Hook’s Atlantic Basin is still running that weekend: the first boats of the morning are free for everyone, and after 11am a round trip is $5 for adults and free for children 12 and under. Costumed dogs take over Cobble Hill Park for the Cobble Hill Association’s annual party — an easy hour for kids who would rather meet a beagle in a hot-dog suit than brave a haunted house. Park Slope’s beloved Halloween night parade returns, courtesy of the Park Slope Civic Council, led this year by an orange-and-black vintage Ford under the theme “The Haunted Forest of Brooklyn.” It heads down Seventh Avenue, turns left on 3rd Street and ends at the Old Stone House in Washington Park, where the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music plays. Dumbo’s beloved Halloween tradition: parade behind brass bands and puppets through Brooklyn Bridge Park to the Archway, where crafts, a photo booth, live music, candy and costume prizes await. The Howl-O-Ween dog costume contest is at 2pm on car-free Washington Street, 60+ local businesses hand out candy around the neighborhood from 3 to 6pm (look for the pumpkin sign), and spooky projections light up the Manhattan Bridge nightly from October 23. NYC DOT’s Trick-or-Streets will close 45 Brooklyn blocks and plazas to cars on Halloween, each with its own hours — among them Joralemon Street and Columbia Place in Willowtown, Hoyt Street in Boerum Hill, Pearl Street Plaza in Dumbo, Park Place in Prospect Heights, Montgomery Place and 11th Street in Park Slope, and Marcy Avenue Plaza in Bed-Stuy. The program runs all October across 160 sites; Brooklyn’s signature event is at Hillel Plaza in Flatbush on Thursday, October 22, 2–6pm. Every street, date and time at DOT.
Grand Avenue Halloween Block Party | Clinton Hill

Private Picassos and Good People NYC fill the block with trick-or-treating, fog and bubbles, glow sticks and glowing sidewalk chalk, giant inflatables, trick-or-treat bag decorating and a giant cardboard haunted house to decorate. Pitched as festive and a little spooky, not terrifying. Costumes encouraged.

Kids paint Halloween scenes straight onto Court Street shop windows, supplies provided, in a Cobble Hill Association event run with Mason Lane Art Advisory; more than 75 children took part last year.
