Free kid-friendly events this week in Brooklyn (2/9-2/15)

Valentine’s Day week has arrived, and with winter school breaks kicking off, Brooklyn families have no shortage of fun things to do with kids of all ages. This week’s highlights include Hopalong Andrew’s Valentine’s Day kids concert at Time Out Market, the New York Sword Dance Festival at venues across the borough, a Ringling Brothers pop-up circus at Central Library, family-friendly Great Backyard Bird Count events in Brooklyn Bridge Park and Prospect Park, and a Lunar New Year celebration at the Brooklyn Museum.

Fanal – Fè Limyè: Lantern Workshop and Exhibition Closing at Weeksville Heritage Center | Crown Heights

Join us to celebrate the closing of Fanal – Fè Limyè by artist Fitgi Saint-Louis! On view through February, this radiant piece stands as a reminder of the enduring light we each hold and can build upon with our kaleidoscope of collective action. You will learn the history of the fanal as a Haitian holiday tradition by creating your very own fanal and hear from artist Fitgi Saint-Louis herself on the significance of the craft, the exhibition, creating community through art, and cultural tradition.

Singer Araceli accompanied by her Peruvian instrument, called charango, will teach us Spanish through her songs for children. A fun and interactive class where everyone can learn and become familiar with the Spanish language. The class has fun puppets that will help us connect more with the audience.

Community Access Thursdays at Brooklyn Children’s Museum | Crown Heights

Explore some of the museum’s most-loved exhibits, including toddler-favorite Totally Tots, the miniature shops of World Brooklyn, our NEST kids’ climber, and more. Then check out ColorLab, the family art studio located on the 2nd floor of the Museum, where artists of all ages can explore, make, and celebrate art. Plus, say hello to BCM’s live animals at Animal Encounters, which repeats twice, first from 3:00-3:20pm and again from 3:45-4:05 pm. It’s recommended that you reserve your tickets in advance online. Exhibition Tour Center of The Battle of Brooklyn: Fought and Remembered | Brooklyn Heights

The Battle of Brooklyn: Fought and Remembered is a new exhibition at the Center for Brooklyn History (on view through Monday, December 30, 2026) that uses artifacts, archival documents, rare maps, and interactive features to explore the 1776 Battle of Brooklyn. As the half-blood son of a Greek god, Percy Jackson has newly-discovered powers he can’t control, a destiny he doesn’t want, and a mythology textbook’s worth of monsters on his trail. The Great Backyard Bird Count | Prospect Park

The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) is a free, fun and easy event that engages bird watchers of all ages nationwide. The Brooklyn Bird Club will lead Prospect Park’s GBBC contingent in an effort to count birds and create a real-time snapshot of bird populations. Sightings made during the walk will be submitted to the GBBC website and are used by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology to learn more about how birds are doing and how to protect them and the environment we share.
