Free kid-friendly events this week in Brooklyn (3/16-3/22)

This week is full of fun for families. Highlights include special workshops for teens about time management and righting their wrongs in Coney Island and Prospect Heights, a St. Patrick’s Day craft in Williamsburg, a special Ezra Jack Keats storytime in Prospect Heights, free open play in DUMBO, learning about fantastic fibers in East Flatbush, and a St. Patrick’s Day parade in Bay Ridge.

Choo Choo Train Time | Flatbush

Join the Cortelyou Library for Choo Choo Train Time on the floor in the Children’s area of the library. Enjoy free play with their wooden train tracks and trains.

Future 101 – Time Management for Teens | Coney Island

Join this helpful session at the Coney Island Library. Teens will learn the importance of time management, strategies on how to prioritize and manage their schedules, and develop the skills to stay organized and manage their time.

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by stoping by and saying hello to Leonard Library staff! Grab & Go Craft Kit includes 1 already cut out foam Shamrock, green construction paper to make your own leaf, and 2 craft sticks to make puppets. Play, sing and have fun with your puppets.

Henna Party for Eid al-Fitr at the Gerritsen Beach Library | Gerritsen Beach

In honor of the upcoming holiday of Eid al-Fitr, tweens and teens of all beliefs are invited to a Henna Party at Gerritsen Beach Library! Choose your design, and let their henna artist decorate your hand. Henna is a form of paste deprived from a plant and can be used as temporary tattoos for celebrations. It is temporary and non-toxic, and will last for up to 7 days.

New Mom Meet Up at Fontainhas | DUMBO

Bring your baby to Fontainhas for some cozy chai and hang with other new moms. Hosted every week by the new mom pop-up POST.

Sensory Storytime | East Flatbush

This storytime at the East Flatbush Library is designed to create a sensory friendly, intimate, and comfortable environment with movement and music. This event is for neurodivergent children (with autism, ADHD, etc).

Read and Play | Sunset Park

Wednesday, March 18th | 1:00pm-1:45pm | Ages 0-5

Visit the Sunset Park Library to hear stories, make friends and play at their inclusive story time.  This event is for children with and without disabilities. ASL Interpretation available upon advanced request. A parent or caregiver must accompany children.

Take advantage of free admission hours at the New York Aquarium from 3:00-6:00pm on Wednesdays. Note that advance timed tickets are required (max of 4 per group); the Wednesday Afternoon Ticket Store will open on Monday at 3:00pm for that Wednesday’s reservations.

Mindful Coloring Hour | Bed-Stuy

Join the Bedford Library for a peaceful hour of coloring with crayons and colored pencils. All materials will be provided. All ages are welcome.

Community Iftar at Another World | Crown Heights

Wednesday, March 18th | 6:30pm 

Break fast with your friends, family, and neighbors at this kid-friendly community Iftar presented by the Crown Heights Care Collective and Another World. There will be a story reading about Ramadan. Bring your prayer mat if you would like to, and Halal dishes to share!

 

THURSDAY

Community Access Thursdays at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum | Crown Heights

Thursdays | 2:00pm-5:00pm | Reserving tickets in advance is recommended

Explore some of the museum’s most-loved exhibits, including toddler-favorite Totally Tots, the miniature shops of World Brooklyn, our NEST kids’ climber, and more. Then check out ColorLab, the family art studio located on the 2nd floor of the Museum, where artists of all ages can explore, make, and celebrate art. Plus, say hello to BCM’s live animals at Animal Encounters, which repeats twice, first from 3:00-3:20pm and again from 3:45-4:05 pm. It’s recommended that you reserve your tickets in advance online. Walk-ins always welcome.

Nature Storytime | Brooklyn Bridge Park

Join for Nature Storytime at the Environmental Education Center! Held at 3:00 PM on the third Thursday of every month. Librarians from Brooklyn Public Library Adams Street location lead for an exciting and engaging storytime session, along with singing and rhymes. Each month they select a book to pair with the Education Center’s monthly nature theme. Stick around after to check out all the animals and activities in the room during Open Hours!

Ezra Jack Keats Story and Craft | Central Library

Red Hook Pinball Museum | Red Hook

The Red Hook Pinball Museum is open for free play (with donations accepted) every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, from 1-10pm! It’s NYC’s only vintage pinball museum, with games from 1871-1971, and you can play on the first pinball machine ever made!

Open Hours at the Environmental Education Center | Brooklyn Bridge Park

Visit the Environmental Education Center for Open Hours. Open Hours offer the opportunity for self-led investigation with guidance by expert educators to reveal the hidden stories found within and around Brooklyn Bridge Park. Explore their critter and fish tanks, a 10′ model of the Park, and enjoy custom arts, crafts, and reading materials which rotate on a monthly basis.

Teen Time: Dungeons and Dragons Session 1 | Park Slope

Park Slope Library is forming their own Dungeons and Dragons group. Come to Session 1 where participants will start their first campaign. No experience necessary! This group will meet twice/month on Friday. Snacks and materials are provided.

Right My Wrongs – Teen News & Media Literacy Series at the Central Library | Prospect Heights

Everyone makes mistakes online – what matters is how we respond afterward. This workshop introduces teens to a three-step framework for addressing online harm: recognize, repair, and rebuild. Snacks will be provided. This workshop is designed by Common Sense Media and is part of the Teen News & Media Literacy Pilot Program funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

parkrun is a free, worldwide, weekly event where people of all ages and abilities walk, jog, run, or volunteer in a 5k event on Saturday mornings–in Brooklyn, you can join every week in Brooklyn Bridge Park! Families register online and receive a barcode which will record their time. All ages are welcome, and there is a coffee and catch-up after each run!

Events for Youth & Families: Seussical | Prospect Heights

Come to this special event about the Central Library. The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many “thinks.” Horton faces a double challenge – not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant.

Art Under the Bridge: Make Your Own Lay-Flat Book | Brooklyn Bridge Park

Learn how to make your own hand-bound books with educators, as part of Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Art Under the Bridge series. Participants will make collage covers using preserved leaves and then learn to bind our books with a coptic stitch that allows them to lay flat, perfect for sketching or journaling. No previous experience necessary. The workshop requires some manual dexterity to thread and pull a sewing needle through cardboard. Participants will be using sharp tools, and all participants will need to sign a legal waiver.

Akeem S. Roberts launches Class Pet Ghost Detective #2 | Kensington
