New admissions policies in “choice” schools in our neighborhood

Two “choice” schools families in Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO and beyond can apply for are part of a new pilot project to help foster diversity within the schools. Districtwide choice schools are un-zoned schools open to anyone in the district(s) to apply via lottery. Brooklyn New School in Carroll Gardens and Academy of Arts and Letters in Fort Greene will implement new admissions policies in school year 2016/2017.

Academy of Arts & Letters PS 492 in Fort Greene gives priority to students in District 13. It will be giving priority for 40 percent of seats to students who qualify for free or reduced lunch after prioritizing siblings starting in school year 2016/2017.

The Brooklyn New School PS 146 in Carroll Gardens gives priority in the lottery to students from Districts 13, 14, 15 and 16. Starting in school year 2016/2017, the school will give priority to children in these districts whose families qualify for free and reduced price lunch after prioritizing siblings and current pre-k children. The new admission policy will be for both the Pre-K and Kindergarten admissions.

To qualify for free or reduced lunch, a household with four family members cannot exceed an annual household income of $44,863. More details here.
