A-Fantis in Downtown Brooklyn is an independent 3K to 8th Grade school with a strong focus on Greek language, Hellenic studies including Greek history, philosophy and mythology and the arts. The school offers the City’s first Greek public dual language program. A-Fantis is home to 190 students in total of which around 60% either speak Greek at home or have some Greek heritage.
The facility features a gym, science lab and rooftop playground. Recess takes place for all students on the school’s rooftop playground.
The preschool 3s and UPK classes have room for 56 students and each classroom features 3 teachers, at least one of them is a Greek native speaker. Children in the fee-based 3s program and regular UPK program get a 20 minute Greek language class every day. The Greek UPK Dual Language Program consists of 50% of instruction in Greek and 50% in English. Weekly specials are gym, art and music (no religious studies in the preschool program).
Fee-based after school programs are available for all grades until 6 pm. UPK hours are 8.15 am to 2.35 pm and you can apply for the UPK program within the UPK application for public schools. The UPK program gives priority to families living in District 15, no previous Greek knowledge required. Tuition for Pre-K 3s is $13,750 per year. Children in the 3s program have priority for the UPK programs at the school.
Students in elementary and middle school learn Greek daily for 45 minutes and Hellenic culture 1 to 2 times per week. All students in Kindergarten and up need to be baptised Christian and have a weekly Greek Orthodox religion class.
Students in 8th Grade take high school level courses in English, Algebra and Living Environment and an annual Senior Trip to Greece. The school accepts new students into all grades, for those who do not speak Greek yet they offer a Greek language transition program. School hours for Kindergarten and up are 8 am to 3 pm. Tuition ranges between $10,500 and $11,250 annually for elementary and middle school students and includes busing from certain neighborhoods in Brooklyn.
