A look inside the 3K for All and UPK program at PS 307 in Vinegar Hill

PS 307, a Magnet school for STEAM studies, has rolled out the new 3K for All program in the fall of 2021 and plans to grow the program during the next school years. The school serves students from nearby communities including Farragut Houses, Fort Greene, DUMBO, Vinegar Hill, Downtown Brooklyn and beyond from 3 years old through 5th Grade.

Learning at PS 307 is STEM-infused and project-based throughout all grades. A big emphasis lies on play-based learning in the 3s and 4s program with projects like building a community with fire station and school, science experiments with sand and water, in depth reading units on animals and lots of building activities.

PS 307 runs two 3K for All and 2 UPK (4’s) classrooms currently with the option of adding a classroom each grade next school year. School hours are 8 am to 2.20 pm and a fee-based afterschool program is available until 6 pm for 3K through 1st Grade. The free Dodge YMCA Afterschool program serves students from Kindergarten through 5th Grade. Children do not need to be potty-trained to enter the 3K for All program, they have a diaper changing station.

Each classroom has at least two teachers, class size in the 3K program is maximum 15 and in the UPK program maximum 18 students. Scholars have gym and Mandarin twice a week and Music once a week. They go to recess daily at the Pre-K exclusive school yard and eat breakfast and lunch in the classroom.

First math concepts are introduced in 3K for All through sorting shapes, understanding patterns etc. Students get accustomed with the alphabet through the “letter of the week” and first letter tracing exercises. Teachers in all grades receive professional development in STEM and host STEM days in the classroom weekly. In the upper grades students get fencing, digital literacy and violin instructions.

Parents can contact the parent coordinator Mister Williams [email protected] to schedule a one-on-one in person tour of the school. Applications for 3K for All and UPK are open now and you can apply online here. PS 307 takes out of zone and out of district students. Find out more about the applications overall here.
