The Brooklyn Preschool of Science believes in early life experiences, especially when it comes to biodiversity. Growing up in Brooklyn can pose some challenges when you’re trying to instill a love of plant and animal life in your children. Just because these animals are not living in the city does not mean that we should provide our students with these unique experiences. When you give 2 or 3 years old an opportunity to see roughly 30 to 40 different animals a school year, you are sure to make them very passionate about the beautiful world of biodiversity and the life sciences.
You want to create a child who is a Renaissance kid, so they can decipher for themselves what likes and dislikes they have in life. If you’re not able to give them those experiences, then they’re never going to know. The Brooklyn Preschool of Science is about to begin a fantastic unit of study on Animals in the Neighborhood. During this beautiful unit of study, the children will be creating habitats and decomposition columns. In just one week, the children will be looking at decomposers like mealworms, red worms, earthworms, pillbugs, and more. The beauty of a study like this is if there is a child that is hesitant to want to touch and hold one of these Critters, be rest assured that the majority of the class will, and this level of both confidence and excitement in touching and holding will carry over to the child that was initially hesitant. Simply, give them this experience.
The school also houses animals that are part of our BPoS family every day throughout the year. From 500-gallon fish tanks to mammals like gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, and everyone’s favorite, the dwarf bunny. We have fun invertebrates like hermit crabs, Madagascar Cockroaches, Bessbug beetles, and more. Providing our students with this opportunity will guarantee that they have a passion for the life sciences. Our goal is to create passionate learners, and we need to ensure that they have many beautiful early life experiences.
