38% of New York City students passed the state English exams in 2016, a jump of nearly 8 points this year, matching the state average for the first time. City students also made smaller gains in math: 36.4 % passed the exams in 2016, 1% up from last year and compared to 39% statewide.
This was the forth year the state tests were aligned to the nationwide learning standards known as Common Core which tests students in grades 3 to 8 in Math and English (ELA).

PS 8 in Brooklyn Heights: 71% of all students were proficient or excelled the ELA Common Core Learning Standards, while 63% were proficient or excelled the Math Common Core Learning Standards in 2016.
PS 307 in Vinegar Hill: 24% of all students were proficient or excelled the ELA Common Core Learning Standards, while 17% were proficient or excelled the Math Common Core Learning Standards in 2016.
PS 29 in Cobble Hill: 76% of all students were proficient or excelled the ELA Common Core Learning Standards, while 75% were proficient or excelled the Math Common Core Learning Standards in 2016.
PS 58 in Carroll Gardens: 78% of all students were proficient or excelled the ELA Common Core Learning Standards, while 78% were proficient or excelled the Math Common Core Learning Standards in 2016.
PS 261 in Boerum Hill: 54% of all students were proficient or excelled the ELA Common Core Learning Standards, while 59% were proficient or excelled the Math Common Core Learning Standards in 2016.
PS 9 in Prospect Heights: 51% of all students were proficient or excelled the ELA Common Core Learning Standards, while 46% were proficient or excelled the Math Common Core Learning Standards in 2016.
PS 287 in Downtown Brooklyn: 13% of all students were proficient or excelled the ELA Common Core Learning Standards, while 17% were proficient or excelled the Math Common Core Learning Standards in 2016.
Lottery school PS 133 in Gowanus: 47% of all students were proficient or excelled the ELA Common Core Learning Standards, while 42% were proficient or excelled the Math Common Core Learning Standards in 2016.
Lottery school Arts & Letters in Fort Greene: 59% of all students were proficient or excelled the ELA Common Core Learning Standards, while 50% were proficient or excelled the Math Common Core Learning Standards in 2016.
Lottery school Brooklyn New School in Carroll Gardens: 46% of all students were proficient or excelled the ELA Common Core Learning Standards, while 36% were proficient or excelled the Math Common Core Learning Standards in 2016. Note: The school had an exceptionally high opt-out rate for the tests. Only 13 students total were tested in ELA and 14 students school-wide for Math.
Lottery school Community Roots Charter School in Fort Greene: 50% of all students were proficient or excelled the ELA Common Core Learning Standards, while 44% were proficient or excelled the Math Common Core Learning Standards in 2016.
