Free kid-friendly events this week in Brooklyn (9/16-9/22)

There are so many free fall events for families happening this week in Brooklyn, including BAM’s African Diaspora Dance celebration in Brooklyn Bridge Park, LEGO Robotics Leagues at Brooklyn Public Library branches, a Japanese festival at Industry City’s Japan Village, the Brooklyn Brujeria Festival under the Dumbo Archway, and Montague Open Streets in Brooklyn Heights. On Governors Island, there will be a FAD Market Pop-Up and the Annual African Film Festival Family Day. Plus, story times, volunteer opportunities for older kids, stargazing events, free salsa dancing lessons, skateboarding classes, and more!

Fall Into Step: Gamelan Dharma Swara at Brooklyn Commons Park | Downtown Brooklyn

From ballet to contemporary styles, our Fall Into Step series showcases a diverse range of performances from talented dancers and choreographers. Each show will take you on a journey through the art form while captivating your senses and igniting your passion for movement. On September 18, Gamelan Dharma Swara performs. One of the leading Balinese gamelan and dance groups in the United States, Gamelan Dharma Swara  has performed at renowned NYC music venues including Le Poisson Rouge, Symphony Space, Joe’s Pub, Roulette, and BAM. Most recently, they performed at National Sawdust as part of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, Du Yun’s Pan-Asian Sounding Festival. Their performance in The Commons will include 3 traditional dancers and 2 musicians.

Set Up Community Dinner with Local Refugee Families at St. Ann’s Church | Brooklyn Heights

Each month we host a Community Dinner and invite community members to meet and make connections with newly arrived refugees. Set up volunteers will be tasked with setting up the tables, making place cards, decorating, among other duties. You will help the refugee family warm the meal they bring and assist them in plating the food. You will act as hosts throughout the evening and also help clean up if you are able to stay through the end of dinner (encouraged, but not required). We welcome youth ages 8-18 to sign up as SET UP VOLUNTEER . Brooklyn Children’s Museum has a new natural science-inspired makerspace, and you can visit it for FREE during Amazon Free Hours on Thursday afternoons! Nature’s Engineers is designed for children to learn from nature and engage in hands-on STEM activities, fostering creativity and critical thinking. This month’s project is making a fossil! Join in September to analyze fossils from BCM’s collection. Visitors will practice describing, measuring, and comparing attributes of objects to understand what Earth was like thousands of years ago. Then, visitors will create their own fossil cast inspired by BCM’s collection of fossils!

Brooklyn Public Library’s Center for Brooklyn History (CBH) is the host of NYC History Day! NYCHD 2025 is the regional contest for National History Day (NHD). New York City middle and high schoolers get to do original research on a historical topic of their choice and make their own exhibition, performance, documentary, website, or paper. Winners from NYCHD will have a chance to compete at the State and potentially National level. All participants will be able to gain important research skills, connect with amazing New York City cultural institutions, and have fun!

Grocery shop for neighbors who are homebound, experiencing hardship, elderly, or otherwise lacking time, resources, or ability to shop for groceries themselves. Volunteers will shop for items on the provided list(s) and attempt to stay within the budget assigned by our partner, West Brooklyn Waterfront Mutual Aid. A WBWMA veteran volunteer will be there to assist you should you have questions. WBWMA will pay for the groceries at check out and deliver them.

Introduction to Birdwatching Outings | Prospect Park

Whether you’re just starting out or have already joined the birding ranks, this introductory outing is for you! Every Saturday, join Prospect Park Alliance and a member of the Brooklyn Bird Club on an introductory walk to learn the basics of birding and search for the dozens of species that visit Prospect Park through all seasons. All levels are welcome and walks will begin at the Prospect Park Audubon Center. No registration necessary. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring binoculars if you have them. Route Description: This outing is at a leisurely pace with lots of stops to observe birds. A different route through the park may be taken each week. There may be steps, slight inclines, and grass and dirt paths with exposed roots. We will cover approximately 1.5-2 miles.

Join the Prospect Park Alliance for nature education programs at the Prospect Park Audubon Center, the first urban Audubon Center in the nation. Activities include:

  • Leaf Art | 10–12 pm | Let’s have fun exploring the unique features of trees and their uniquely shaped leaves. Let your creativity flourish as you craft art inspired by nature.
  • Animal Encounter | 11 am–12 pm | Join Alliance Naturalists in learning more about the animals in the Audubon Center’s collection. This program starts promptly at 11 am.
  • Tree ID Walk | 12–1 pm | Join us as we delve into the wonder of nature! Are you curious about why and when trees shed their leaves? Gain hands-on experience in citizen science as we explore the Prospect Park environment and witness how changing temperatures affect the trees. We will provide you with a guide to help you record your observations. This program leaves the Audubon Center promptly at 12 pm.

The next hour, the kids will start with basketball clinics and AirOdart Clinics with our coaches, each separated by age group: 12/13; 14/15; 16/17. During the final hour, we will have our Youth apply the skills that they’ve just learned during the official basketball games simultaneously. We will have fruit, water and healthy snacks for the kids as well as uniforms. This health & sports program will be help every Saturday until Saturday, September 28th.
