Open Spots at the new public Harbor Middle School in Red Hook

The Harbor Middle School located in Red Hook will offer an integrated project-based learning experience for students in Grades 6 and up as of Fall 2022. The school is launching a STEAM- and Maritime-focused curriculum with hands-on learning in NYC’s first harbor middle school. Students study marine biology, weather and climate, maritime history, maps and geography, gardening and much more.

Through a partnership with Brooklyn Boatworks students build a fully functioning sailboat that they sail with in the East River at the end of 6th Grade. Students also study, care for and observe live see animals in the STEAM lab at the school and work on projects with their partner Billion Oyster Project. All learning in ELA, math, science and social studies will be infused with maritime project-based content. Take a virtual tour now.

The school is located in District 15 but it has open spots for in- and out-of-district students. The team plans to kick off with 2 to 3 sections of 6th Grade in September. It is currently incubated in the PS 676 school building until the new school building opens in 2026. The new school building will feature indoor pool, auditorium, hydroponics and much more. In September this year they will launch their first 6th grade class and will begin gradually transitioning from an elementary school. As this year’s kindergarten moves up, the grade they leave behind will be closed, so next school year they will have grades 1 to 6, the following year 2 to 7, and so on until they only run grades 6 to 8.
