What parents living in DUMBO applying for Kindergarten need to know now

An update for families living in the current PS 8 zone, especially those with their oldest children born in 2011, applying for Kindergarten for school year 2016/2017:

  • The CEC 13 will vote on the rezoning proposal at the CEC meeting on January 5th, 2016 during a working session from 6:30 – 8:30 pm at P.S. 56 Lewis H Latimer, 170 Gates Avenue in Brooklyn
  • The Kindergarten applications are open between December 7th, 2015 and January 15th, 2016. You can apply online.
  • You might want to wait with your application until after the CEC vote on 1/5/16 to have clarity on which school you will be zoned for.
  • You can list up to 12 schools on your DOE application, there are various un-zoned schools in our district (District 13) you can apply for. You can separately apply to as many Charter Schools as you want directly with the Charter Schools. More details in our Charter and “choice” school guide here.
  • This rezoning proposal includes sibling grandfathering into PS 8 as a part of the plan.
  • Visit open houses at both schools! PS 8 will host one January 13, 2016 from 9 to 10.30 am. PS 307 will host open houses on Thursday December 17 from 9:30-10:30 am, Thursday January 7 from 9:30-10 am and Monday, January 11 from 6 pm to 7 pm.
  • If the rezoning does not get approved, PS 8 will have a long wait list. Students on the waitlist from throughout the current PS 8 zone will most likely get Kindergarten spots offered at PS 307.
  • Pre-K applications for children born in 2012 will be available in Spring 2016.
