4k new apartments could be coming to Atlantic Avenue

The City has presented a draft rezoning plan for parts of Atlantic Avenue touching Bed Stuy, Crown Heights, Clinton Hill and Prospect Heights. The Atlantic Avenue Mixed-Use Plan is a community-led planning process for an inclusive, mixed-use stretch of Atlantic Avenue and neighboring blocks in Crown Heights and Bedford-Stuyvesant. The plan would support up to 4,000 new housing units, new space for jobs and services, safer, more pedestrian-friendly streets and investments in neighborhood improvements.

The Atlantic Avenue Mixed-Use Plan area runs along an approximately 13-block stretch of Atlantic Avenue and the area’s current industrial zoning rules prevent new housing and limit job growth despite the area’s great connectivity. As a result, a mix of vacant lots, self-storage, and auto shops characterize Atlantic Avenue today.

The draft rezoning includes approx. 4,000 units of new housing (1,150 to 1,550 permanently affordable units). The draft proposal also calls for high density along Atlantic Avenue—up to 18 stories—with apartments above ground-floor retail.
