Last Friday Governor Cuomo announced the passage of a $168.3 billion New York State Budget including the authorization of Design Build on three projects: the reconstruction of the BQE; building new jails to replace the Rikers Island complex; and repairing public housing buildings.
Had it not passed now, DOT would have proceeded with a Design-Bid-Build approach, which would have cost $113 million more to complete the BQE project and led to 16,000 trucks daily being diverted onto local Brooklyn streets in 2026 due to the extended project timeframe.
The Brooklyn-Queens-Expressway rehabilitation project is estimated to take four to five years. It will restore the crumbling 1.5 mile stretch of roadway from Sands Street to Atlantic Avenue which includes the triple cantilever underpinning the Brooklyn Heights Promenade.
