The middle school application for students in 5th Grade will open the week of January 10, 2022, and the deadline to apply will be during the week of February 28, 2022. Middle school welcome letters will be available for students currently in 5th Grade very soon. This personalized letter includes information on how to access your MySchools account. You can already find out about programs here.
- All current fifth grade public school families (DOE and charter) will receive their child’s welcome letter in the mail. You can also get a copy from your current school counselor
- Private and parochial school families can request your child’s welcome letter from a Family Welcome Center.
The Department of Education will continue to pause screening (using students’ academic records in admissions) for students entering middle school in fall 2022. For middle school programs with more applicants than seats, offers this year will be made using admissions priorities (free and reduced lunch) and random selection (lottery). All district-wide programs in District 13 and 15 are lottery-based middle schools with admissions priorities for students in poverty. This year, arts-based middle school programs will resume holding auditions.

Students in both districts can also apply to boroughwide and citywide programs, some of those programs listed below:
- Mark Twain in Dyker Heights, citywide program for gifted and talented students, lottery school apart from the arts programs
- Nest M in lower Manhattan, citywide program for gifted and talented students, lottery school
- Institute for Collaborative Education in the East Village, citywide progressive program, lottery school with 50% if seats going to kids who qualify for free lunch
- The Anderson School on the Upper West Side, citywide gifted and talented program, lottery school
