Infrastructure updates for Downtown Brooklyn, Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO

The Downtown Brooklyn Partnership has teamed up with NYC DOT to liven up DTBK’s #SharedStreets network. “Street Patterns” by artist Nelson Rivas, aka Cekis, will cover over 17.5k square ft. of streets plus Jay Street pedestrian and bike corral spaces, making it NYC’s most expansive street art project. Shared Streets are designed to slow travel speeds where pedestrians and cyclists are prioritized, and motorists are treated as guests. Necessary vehicular access is maintained for loading, carting, parking, and other services. Slow vehicular speeds are maintained through traffic calming measures, signage, street markings, and the addition of public space amenities in expanded pedestrian spaces.

Council Member Lincoln Restler’s office and the Department of Sanitation have delivered 5 new trash bins to Brooklyn Heights. The new containers are higher capacity and more rat-resistant than the old wire bins they’ve replaced. (Other new bins have been delivered across the 33rd District.). The new bins can be spotted on Columbia Heights at the corners of Pineapple, Pierrepont and Clark Streets, as well as on two corners of Hicks and Clark Streets. The Brooklyn Heights Association continues to advocate for the replacement of additional old bins.

DUMBO street infrastructure update! Main Street and Plymouth Street construction within the DUMBO street improvement project is nearing completion. The streets now feature the old historic cobblestones without bulbs and widened sidewalks.

The sidewalks / underpasses at Washington & York streets near Cadman Plaza have been cleaned. The team of Lincoln Restler and DUMBO Action Committee are working on getting the underpass at Cadman and Hicks cleaned, and then, getting these areas on a semi-regular cleaning schedule.

The new park named after Dr. Susan Smith McKinney Steward located next to the F train entrance in DUMBO is opening this fall to the public. The park will feature brand new playground equipment and water sprinklers for ages 2 to 12, adult fitness area, synthetic turf for community events like movie nights and concerts, projector for movie nights, seating, new trees, public bathrooms, 5 water fountains and more. All community members are invited to join the new friends group @ DrSusanPark on FB and Instagram and to create a neighborhood park for all who live in the area!
