Brooklyn Prospect Charter School, a Charter School network with now 3 elementary schools, soon 3 middle schools and 1 high school has opened up a new campus in Sunset Park this school year. Sunset Yards Elementary School currently offers Kindergarten to 2nd grade, growing one grade each year up to 5th grade at this new location near Industry City. They give priority to students living in District 15 with 40% of the seats reserved for children qualifying for free lunch. Each classroom has up to 28 students with 2 teachers and they have capacity for 2 classrooms per grade (one of them an integrated classroom).
The spacious industrial loft-looking building on 39th Street features a library, an art room, a gym, break-out rooms for small group work, and services like OT, a rooftop playground and a cafeteria. As of September 2023, the building will also house their new District 15 middle school. Priority will be given to current SYES students.
A majority of the learning each day is done in small groups aligned with the Brooklyn Prospect Charter School model overall. Each grade focuses on 3 major units per year prepping the students early on for the International Baccalaureate experience in high school. Kindergarten learning units are weather, trees and toys, 1st grade learning units are tools, sun, moon and stairs and birds. 2nd grade learning units are schools around the world, bees and pollinators and dinosaurs. These topics are integrated and deepened across the subjects from science, to arts, writing and math.
Cluster classes are Spanish 3-4 times per week, gym, visual arts and music.
School hours are 8.20 am to 3.45 pm four days a week and until 1.30 pm on Wednesdays. A daily after school program until 6 pm is available for a sliding scale fee. School buses are available from various neighborhoods in D15, 13 and 17 as they have been able to take out of District students so far. Find out more about the school here.
