Utilizing renewable energy sources, this new hub on John Street in Vinegar Hill will serve as a critical plug-in point for future offshore wind infrastructure. The hub will be able to accommodate up to 1,500 megawatts or enough electricity to power 750,000 homes with renewable wind energy. This is is a transformative infrastructure project for Cone Edison that will deliver large amounts of increasingly renewable power to southeastern Brooklyn.
The Brooklyn Clean Energy Hub is an $810 million transmission substation that will rise where three gas combustion turbines stood near the East River in Vinegar Hill. Construction on the site is expected to begin in mid-2024 with the entire project being finalized before the summer of 2028.
Con Ed will demolish the decommissioned gas turbines currently at the site and a new building will be constructed featuring a green roof and solar panels.
