Whether you follow the WNBA’s New York Liberty or not, you may have heard of their mascot Ellie the Elephant, who has become a sensation on social media for her dance moves, stylish looks, antics at Barclays Center, and all-around swagger. Ellie, a real Brooklynite, calls Barclays Center her home.
Ellie, named after Ellis Island, became the official mascot of the New York Liberty two years ago in honor of the team’s 25th season, but she is having a moment this summer—as is the team she cheers for. From halftime performances inspired by Beyoncé and Lil’ Kim to showing off various looks on the red carpet to gracing the cover of Time Out NY, Ellie has become a celebrity in her own right.
Here’s what else you need to know about Ellie’s team, the New York Liberty:
- At 20-4, the 2024 Liberty are off to the team’s best start through 24 games in franchise history.
- In July, the Liberty became the first WNBA team to reach 20 wins.
- Liberty players Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu have were selected to play on Team USA in the Olympic Games in Paris. They are the first-ever Liberty duo to represent the USA! The WNBA season will take a month-long break during the Olympics.
