Families with students in 5th Grade can start applying for Charter and private schools. Department of Education Middle School applications are opening October 15, 2024. District 13 and District 15 are hosting public middle school fairs and we are hosting our annual virtual middle school info session with public, Charter and private schools.
Public school applications
- October 15, 2024: Middle school application opens
- November 8, 2024: Deadline to register to test for Mark Twain I.S. 239
- December 20, 2024: Middle school application closes
- April 9, 2025: Middle school offer release
Families with children born in 2014 no matter what school they attend for elementary school will be able to apply for public middle schools here. It is not a first come first service, just fill out the application within the time frame. You can find out about district-wide, borough-wide and city-wide programs here and will be able to add as many programs as you want on your application. Middle school applicants with siblings currently in sixth or seventh grade have priority to attend their sibling’s school. You can register for upcoming open houses in each school’s listing here.
Charter school applications
Applications for most charter schools are open and families need to apply directly on the website of each Charter School network. Application deadline is April 1, 2025 and it is a separate process to public Department of Education schools. Download our Charter School Guide here.

Free Middle School Info Session recording
In our middle school info session with 10 middle schools for parents with current 5th Graders, Brooklyn Bridge Parents presented an overview of the different middle school options in Brooklyn and beyond.
