Community news – Brooklyn Marine Terminal public workshops, Clinton Hill shelter closing, and Bargemusic leaves Brooklyn Bridge Park

The Brooklyn Marine Terminal’s redevelopment process is gaining momentum, Clinton Hill’s controversial shelter for migrants will be shuttered, and the floating concert venue Bargemusic has left Brooklyn Bridge Park, after berthing at Pier 1 for nearly 50 years.

Brooklyn Marine Terminal hosts more public workshops

The public engagement process to create a vision plan for the 122-acre Brooklyn Marine Terminal will conclude in March 2025, giving residents just a few more opportunities to weigh in. While there are so many exciting possibilities for the future of the site—housing, retail, parks, and waterfront recreation, to name a few—some task force members have pushed to prioritize maritime operations and focus on developing a port of the 21st century. Meanwhile, Brooklyn Bridge Park is advocating for more park space and waterfront access, encouraging supporters to attend one of the upcoming public workshops. Read more here about the tradeoffs being considered in this redevelopment process.

The third series of public workshops will take place on January 16 (3pm & 6pm at The Red Room, 100 Columbia Street, and 6pm at the Miccio Center, 110 West 9th Street) and and January 21 (6pm at the Miccio Center, 110 West 9th Street). In these sessions, participants will be invited to use an interactive planning tool to create different scenarios and site layouts with a scaled model of the BMT. Clinton Hill shelter for migrants will close

The city has announced that it will close the mega-shelter at 47 Hall Street, which houses 3,350 migrants at its capacity. The shelter, one of the city’s largest, is slated to close by June 2025. The closure is part of a bigger city-wide initiative to close 46 shelters as the number of migrant arrivals in New York City has declined dramatically. Many Clinton Hill residents have voiced strong opposition to the shelter, citing an increase in crime, trash, and panhandling since it opened.

Bargemusic vessel leaves Brooklyn Bridge Park

Bargemusic, the nearly 50-year-old floating concert hall docked at Pier 1, has left Brooklyn Bridge Park, announcing that their 150-year-old barge must be put out of commission. Brooklyn Bridge Park has offered performance space in the park until the organization can find a new boat, and the organization hopes to resume its concerts in April. Learn more about Bargemusic here, and stay tuned for more updates.
