Visiting the Transit Museum in Downtown Brooklyn With Children

The New York Transit Museum is the largest museum in the United States devoted solely to the history of urban public transportation and one of the few indoor things to do with kids in our neighborhood. For children 2 years and older, the highlights of the museum are the buses which they can sit inside – and act as the bus drivier- as well as the many vintage subway cars to check out. It is definitely a unique experience to have your children scampering around a subway platform, jumping on and off trains, without the typical scares and exhortations. The museum is housed in an historic subway station on Schermerhorn Street, right between Court Street and Boerum Place. Given the location, there is no elevator and it is a little challenging to access with strollers, in addition to the absence of cell phone reception down there, which really makes for an authentic NYC subway experience. All the while, this is a fantastic activity to enjoy with little ones, both for play time and a great chance to learn about their city! Hours: Tuesday – Friday: 10 AM to 4 PM; Saturday – Sunday: 11 AM to 5 PM. Admission: Adults: $7, children 2 – 17 years: $5
