A look inside the Brooklyn Prospect Charter School middle school program

Brooklyn Prospect Charter School has two middle schools, both currently located in District 13. A permanent one in Clinton Hill and a temporary one located in Downtown Brooklyn that will move to a new school building in Gowanus in District 15 for the school year 2023. “The Windsor Terrace Middle School” currently located at 40 Flatbush Avenue Extension in Downtown Brooklyn houses 324 students in Grades 6 to 8 with 4 sections on each grade. Subject areas are ELA, Math, Science, Musical Theater, Humanities, PT and World Languages.

Students who read below grade level do not study a foreign language in 6th Grade but work in a small reading group. All other students learn Spanish for half of the school year and Mandarin for half of the school year and then decide which of the two languages they want to continue with in 7th and 8th Grade.

Lunch and recess are 53 minutes long and happen supervised in the nearby park outside weather permitting. School hours for 6th Graders are 8.15 am to 4 pm 3 days a week and 8.15 am to 3 pm 2 days a week. Homework is around 20 minutes for each core subject and 10 minutes for subjects like Spanish. The Brooklyn Prospect Charter School network offers tuition-free education from K to 12th Grade to over 1,500 students in various locations in Brooklyn. An IB world school, Prospect Schools models its curriculum on the renowned International Baccalaureate Program.

The new middle school in Gowanus will be a 7- story, 30,000 square-foot building including a large commons and outdoor space, a gymnasium and library. In addition to housing traditional classrooms, the building will also feature music and art studios, science labs, and specialized reading rooms. The school plans to move there for school year 2023.
