In recognition of those who paved the way in fields ranging from art and activism to music, medicine, and real estate, this trolley tour will spotlight Black pioneers of Brooklyn and Green-Wood. You’ll visit the memorials of revolutionary artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, civil rights leaders Grace Nail Johnson and James Weldon Johnson, mathematician Charles L. Reason (the first Black college professor in the United States) and other trailblazers who left a lasting impact on the ongoing fight for equality.

The 2nd Annual Rhythms & Movements of African American Culture Festival is a five-day entertainment extravaganza with the theme, Revolution Requires Resistance, and commemorates the 55th Anniversary of Black History Month, February 12–16. The Festival comprises 14 performances, including four evening performances, six youth shows, 11 featured artist performers,and 100 contributing artists. Audiences will experience an immersive exploration of African American identity and activism through theater, dance, music, spoken word, and visual arts. Our inclusive platform honors the past, reimagines the future, and hopes to ignite change and activism through the transformative power of art.

This Black History Month, learn about the history of Western Africa and the Diaspora through the story woven intricately into fabrics. Find your creative resistance by learning about the history art of Adire Eleko, a wax resist dying technique practiced by the Egba People of Yorubaland (Nigeria, Benin and Togo). There will be a tour of the Wyckoff House at 12pm, and the craft will begin at 1pm This event is for all ages, and ideal for ages 4-12. Dress appropriately for the weather – Family Day takes place indoors and outdoors – and wear closed toed shoes if you plan on participating in any farm activities.

In this movement workshop for parents/caretakers and their little ones, we will explore the fundamentals of rhythm and movement, using the lens of African Dance. Listening to the beat of the drum, participants and their parents will explore their range of movement and feel how the rhythm moves them to their core! We will use rhythm and stories to bridge the distance between us and keep on moving to a connected beat! Space is limited, so make sure you arrive early! This event will take the place of our usual Story and Play program.

Brooklyn Conservatory of Music is hosting a Family Singalong + Celebration for Black History Month. The sing-along will allow children to explore the influence of prominent Black musicians and civil rights leaders in American history through song, dance and video, highlighting the way Black artists have taken popular stories, songs, and even classroom concepts and creatively reimagined them.

The Harlem Renaissance was a period of cultural rejuvenation for Black communities in New York, giving rise to literary, artistic, and social movements that advocated for challenging segregation and for the adoption of civil rights. Join us for this children’s program to learn how these developments, including jazz poetry and musical theater, were reflected by Harlem’s architecture then and now. We’ll also create collages using cutouts of New York buildings, art pieces and literature from the Renaissance. All ages welcome!

Join for a family-friendly event for all ages at the Lefferts Historic House to create and showcase superhero capes inspired by the legacy of Shirley Chisholm. Bring scraps of fabric or make use of fabric we provide to decorate your own superhero cape! The interactive all-ages community workshop, Cultivating Resilience Through Self-Compassion, will begin at 2pm and is designed to help you navigate fear and uncertainty. Through guided activities tailored for each age group, you will map the physiological signs of stress and joy in your body, identifying what triggers these feelings and what restores balance. By recognizing these cues, you’ll learn how to “breathe life” into the practices that bring peace and resilience. This workshop starts at 2pm and lasts 90 minutes. Learn more here!
