“Spark by Brooklyn Children’s Museum” at 1 John Street in DUMBO will open its doors to the public on Saturday, October 15th. The museum will occupy a 1,850 sq. ft. space on the first floor with river view and entrances on the street side as well as the park side of the new condo building in Brooklyn Bridge Park. The museum will offer various classes, drop-in activities, school programs in cooperation with PS 307 and birthday parties for children from 6 months to 6 years.
“Block Lab” will be the museum’s signature drop-in activity for ages 2 to 5 offering 1,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor block-building fun. Block Lab is a block-building bonanza featuring Imagination Playground blocks, Magna-Tiles, Tegu blocks and Kapla Planks. Block Lab opened in 2015 as a core exhibit at the Museum’s Crown Heights facility and was an instant success.
Fall classes for “Storytime & Sensory Lounge”, “Music & Movement”, “Little Artists” and more can be booked now. Session runs until December 15 and costs $300 per child. Details here. There will also be a soft crawl space for young children and a hands-on area called the Discovery Den, which will feature a changing selection of the Museum’s permanent collection of handle-able natural science specimens and cultural artifacts.
In 2016, the museum’s educators will partner with the local community school PS 307 to develop and teach programs over a series of sequential visits for Pre-K, Kindergarten and 1st grade students which will include projects about urban planning, design challenges, and building design.
