DUMBO news – construction update, pedestrian zone, events and more

The DUMBO BID held its annual meeting on March 3rd and shared noteworthy details about the neighborhood including more pedestrian zones, family-friendly events and construction news:

Construction and park updates:

  • 50% of the street construction in DUMBO is done. The BID expects the street construction to continue approx 3 years from now to be fully finished
  • Anchorage Place, Pearl Street Triangle and the Archway will become one big permanent pedestrian zone. The timeline for this is tbd, probably at the end of the street construction in 3 years
  • The public lot near the Brooklyn Bridge towards Cadman Plaza currently fenced off and occupied by the Department of Transportation will be turned over to the public and will become an accessible space probably in 2023. Who wants to go skateboarding there?!
  • The new park on York, Bridge and Jay Street in DUMBO formerly known as Bridge Park 2 and renamed to Susan Smith McKinney Steward Park is scheduled to open in April. The 1M square feet space will feature a synthetic turf for ball games and other activities, a running track, adult fitness equipment, projector equipment for movie nights, benches, water sprinklers and a playground for ages 2 to 12.
  • Washington Street will be a 7-day pedestrian zone from 10 am to 9 pm as of April with new outdoor furniture and art installations

Event updates:

  • DUMBO Flea will take place on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 5 pm this year in the Archway. The flea market with over 30 vendors will kick off April 2 and run through October
  • DUMBO Drop, the annual fundraiser for our local public schools PS 307 and Dock Street School will take place bigger than ever on Saturday May 21st. Mark your calendars!
  • Live in the Archway is back this summer on Thursdays with many kid- and family-friendly events running from June 9 to September 1
