Free family-friendly activities and events this week

Our weekly overview of free things to do and events in our neighborhoods in Brooklyn is out! Highlights this week: The Big Summer Get Down dance party in Brooklyn Bridge Park, Porch Stomp 2022 on Governors Island, Juneteenth celebrations and the first week of programming at the new Brooklyn Heights library.

Family movie LUCA | Library in DUMBO | Wednesday, June 15

Watch Luca at the mini movie theater at thee Adams Street Library on Wednesday, June 15 from 3 to 5 pm.

Storytime at the Education Center | Brooklyn Bridge Park | Thursday, June 16

Join the Bklyn Public Library for a story time at the Environmental Education Center in Brooklyn Bridge Park for ages 0 to 5  on Wednesday, June 16 from 4 to 4.30 pm.

Big Summer Get Down | Brooklyn Bridge Park | Friday, June 17

Join Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy for Big Summer Get Down — an all-ages summer dance party on Friday, June 17 from 6 to 10 pm on Pier 3 Plaza! Bring good vibes and your best moves as we dance to popular tunes. This event is free and open to the public. RSVP here.

Porch Stomp | Governors Island | Saturday, June 18

Free and participatory celebration of Folk Music and Dance on Governors Island on Saturday, June 18th, 11am to 5pm. Porch Stomp invites over one hundred folk bands, artists, and performing arts organizations to use the greenery of Nolan Park and Colonel’s Row as a space for performance and education, highlighting artistry ranging from traditional folk to old-time, blues, Cajun, Irish, bluegrass and Americana. Juneteenth celebration | Fort Greene Park | Sunday, June 19

11 – 11.30 am grounding meditation, 11.30 – 12 pm black Fort Greene walking tour, 12 – 7 pm arisan and food market, 2 – 6 pm DJ sets.

Juneteenth celebration | Cadman Plaza Park | Sunday, June 19

Juneteenth celebration from 12 to 4 pm on Sunday, June 19 at Cadman Plaza Park. There will be dance performances and a cat walk by a modeling team, DJ, speeches, live paintings by a famous graffiti artist, face paintings and much more.

Lavender Festival | Governors Island | Saturday and Sunday, June 18 & 19

The annual NYC Lavender Festival returns to Governors Island this weekend. Tours, workshops, harvesting opportunities and family fun activities at the Lavender Fields from 11 am to 5 pm both days.

Basketball clinics | Brooklyn Bridge Park | Tuesdays

Free Youth Basketball Clinics will be hosted on Tuesdays, May 31 through August 30; two age group ranges are offered for 7-12 and 13-17 year olds at the Pier 2 Courts. You can register your children one week in advance, starting Tuesdays at 10 am.

Summer storytime | Brooklyn Bridge Park | Wednesdays

Join the Brooklyn Public Library for a rollicking good time listening to stories, singing songs, and enjoying the breeze from the water! Recommended for ages 2 to 8 years. Every Wednesday June 15 through July 20 from 10.30 am to 11.15 am. Find out more here.

LIVE AT THE ARCHWAY | Dumbo | Thursdays 

A great band on stage + Dumbo artist in the pop up gallery + drinks at the bar, every Thursday from 6 to 8pm. Salsa! Reggae! Modern dance! Rock n Roll! It’s eclectic, it’s free, it’s all ages, it’s always rain or shine in the Archway under the Manhattan Bridge. Find out more here.

Cumbe Dance Series | Fort Greene Park | Sundays

Join the Cumbe Center for African and Diaspora Dance and the Fort Greene Park Conservancy every Sunday from 11am to 12pm in June & July (except July 3rd) for rotating Afro Diasporic Dance groups who will teach a family-friendly workshop followed by a performance.

Kayaking | Brooklyn Bridge Park | Wednesday, Thursday Saturday & Sunday

With the Conservancy’s ever-popular kayaking program held in partnership with Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse, visitors can enjoy gliding across the East River on Wednesday and Thursday evenings as well as Saturdays starting in June through the end of September. New family kayaking on Sundays will also be offered. Advance registration is required for all, starting first weekend of June, make reservation today. Make a reservation here.

Library programming | Brooklyn Heights library | Tuesdays to Saturday

  • Tuesdays 3.30 – 4.30 pm: STEAM Pre-K story time for ages 3 to 5. Registration opens 48 hours in advance.
  • Wednesdays 3.30 – 4.30 pm: Teen Time with board games and bracelets. RSVP here.
  • Thursdays 10.30 – 11.00 am: Babies & Books for 0 to 18 months. RSVP here.
  • Saturday, June 18: Magic show from 2.30 to 3.30 pm. RSVP here.
  • Saturday, June 18: Join us at Brooklyn Heights to paint a canvas banner that you can hang on your wall to support your LGBTQ+ PRIDE and your BLM SUPPORT in our new Teen Zone from 2.30 to 4 pm. RSVP here.
