Free family-friendly events in October in Brooklyn

Brooklyn Book Festival Children’s Day | MetroTech Commons | 10/2

Families enjoy a full day of readings, workshops, performances, book signings, yoga, and art projects with favorite authors and illustrators on Saturday 10/2 from 11 am to 4 pm. Kids can get creative with their favorite authors at workshops and even get their books signed. Play the READy, Spin, Win book wheel for prizes. Plus, the whole family can find new favorite books at the Children’s Marketplace of Books at Brooklyn Commons in Downtown Brooklyn. Find out more here.

The Brooklyn Brujeria Festival | DUMBO | 10/2

A day of music, magic, art, and community celebrating Brooklyn’s immigrant culture and fierce resilience. This year’s line-up features an all star cast of some of the city’s best drum and dance collectives, tarot readers and a market full of magic makers. Bring the family and feel the love and mystique of our global community in DUMBO’s Archway on Saturday 10/2 from 12 to 9 pm.

Atlantic Antic street fair | Various neighborhoods | 10/3

The 46th Atlantic Antic™ festival will take place on Sunday, October 3rd from 12 to 6 pm on Atlantic Avenue from Fourth Avenue to Brooklyn Bridge Park – rain or shine. Recognized as “New York’s best street festival” and the “mother of all street fairs,” this mile long stage and global street bazaar includes stores, restaurants, diverse vendors, specialty food stores and 10 performance stage areas including children’s dance, R&B, Hip-Hop, Folk, Middle Eastern, an all-female drumming group, African and diaspora dance. A designated Kids Zone with Brooklyn Bridge Parents at Boerum Place and Atlantic Ave, a family-run Circus; face painting. pony rides, pop-up performances, community and health booths.

Willoughby Walks | Downtown Brooklyn | 10/6

Downtown Brooklyn Partnership and DOT will close down Willoughby Street (between Pearl and Jay Streets) and Pearl Street on October 6 from 12 to 6:30pm. There will be live music, kid-friendly performances, storytellings, ping ping, giant chess and much more.

Skateboard Theater | Downtown Brooklyn | 10/4 – 10/10

A Skate Play is inspired by Richard Bach’s Jonathan Livingston Seagull, a novella published in 1970 that tells the story of Jonathan, a young, visionary and adventurous seagull, impassioned by the art of flight. Jonathan is up against all odds – his community banishes him and he goes on a powerful journey to learn the meaning of freedom, flight and limitlessness. The story asks each of us to let go of our limited ideas about ourselves and communities so that we may grow personally, spiritually and as a society. Part of a global tour, A SKATE PLAY, is now showing live in Downtown Brooklyn at Golconda skate park from October 4 to 10. Free RSVP here.

Drag Queen Story Time | DUMBO | 10/16

What do drag queens and children have in common? They love dressing up and all things sparkly and fancy! Join storyteller Cholula Lemon in the DUMBO Archway for a bilingual storytime in Spanish and English! We’ll read stories, sing songs, and have fun! The event will take place on Saturday, October 16th at 2 pm in the Archway under the Manhattan Bridge. Walk-up only.

Journey to the stars | Brooklyn Bridge Park | 10/16

Journey to the Stars is back for one night only this fall for International Observe the Moon Night 2021! Join Amateur Astronomers Association of New York on Saturday, October 17 from 7 to 10 pm as they set up high-powered telescopes to observe the moon from the Pier 1 promenade in Brooklyn Bridge Park. This event is walk up only and weather permitting.

Harvest Festival | Brooklyn Bridge Park | 10/23

Join us this fall as we celebrate the changing of the seasons at the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy’s annual Harvest Festival! Don’t miss our kick-off procession, arts and crafts, storytelling, lawn games and more—including our signature pumpkin patch. The free event will take place at Pier 6 on Saturday, October 23 from 11 am to 3 pm.

Pumpkin Point | Governors Island | 10/23 – 10/31

Tens of thousands of pumpkins will populate historic Nolan Park during the final two weeks of October. Stroll through the expansive pumpkin patch and pick out a pumpkin to take home in an exchange for a small donation. There will also be autumn-inspired arts and crafts, storytelling, live music and more. October 23/24 as well as 30/31 from 10 am to 6 pm on Governors Island. Find out more here.
