Coming up in Brooklyn for families this week: free outdoor movies, an inventor’s festival, kayaking, hip hop dance party, “water party” and outdoor pop-up play.

Guardians of the Galaxy Movie | Prospect Park | Wednesday 8/16

Step Up Movie | Seaport | Wednesday 8/16

Wednesday, August 16th, 7:30-9:30pm, The Rooftop at Pier 17, 89 South Street. In this teen tale full of dancing and romancing, a Baltimore tough guy teams with a haughty ballerina for a dance competition at her prestigious private school. Nature Storytime | Education Center Brooklyn Bridge Park | Thursday 8/17

Nature Storytime at the Environmental Education Center held at 3 pm on the third Thursday of every month (during Open Hours). Librarians from Brooklyn Public Library Adams Street location lead for an exciting and engaging storytime session, along with singing and rhymes. Each month they select a book to pair with the Education Center’s monthly nature theme. Stick around after to check out all the animals and activities in the room during Open Hours! Storytime is typically about a half hour long. Walk-ups only.

The Winter Social | Cobble Hill Park | Thursday 8/17

Thursday 8/17, 6-8pm – Started as an opportunity for Cobble Hill neighbors to connect during 2020, The Winter Social offers a growing community of friendly folks who BYO drinks and treats, and simply have a great time together. While the event is not strictly geared towards kids, attendees are a diverse and inclusive mix of folks schmoozing in Cobble Hill Park. The theme for this month’s event is “Water Party” and hosts are encouraging BYO squirt guns, spray bottles, bathing suits, and hydrating treats!

Myrtle Avenue’s Summer Nights Block Party | Friday 8/18

Friday 8/18, 5-8pm – Celebrate the start of a summer weekend with FREE activities up and down Myrtle Avenue! Music, art, crafts, games, raffles, wine tastings and more!

Inventgenuitiy Festival | Governors Island | Saturday 8/19

Beam Center’s Inventgenuity Festival is a celebration of youth creation through projects in technology, imagination and craft. This year’s festival is on Governors Island commemorating the launch of Beam Camp City’s project, seeAsaw. seeAsaw is an interactive and immersive structure of 6 seesaws, connected by a spectacular draping hammock made from rescued fishing nets. The festival features a series of 45-minute workshops created and led by Beam Center youth participants and staff. Saturday and Sunay 11 am to 5 pm, RSVP here.

Painting Workshop | Brooklyn Bridge Park | Saturday 8/19 & Sunday 8/20

Family friendly painting workshop shows how digital network influences people’s living environments, thinking modes, and artistic creation. Chasama presents Art Reveals How Technology Expands Reality by the artist Peng Qi through at 1 Brooklyn Bridge Park. During his exhibition, the artist will give back to the community by holding two painting workshops. Saturday 4 to 5 pm, free with RSVP here.

50 years of Hip Hop | Pier 3 | Saturday 8/19

On Saturday, August 19 the Conservancy presents Big Summer Get Down with DJ Chuck Chillout! Join for a block-party style dance party on the waterfront at Pier 3 Plaza from 6:00-10:00 PM, celebrating 50 years of Hip Hip in NYC. 6 to 10 pm.

DUMBO Family Games | Washington Street DUMBO | Sunday 8/20

Enjoy our epic Lego table, plus building blocks, arts & crafts, Corn hole, Connect Four, arts & crafts, balloon twisting by Leaf Medical & Dental and more on car-free Washington Street on Sundays from 11 am to 1 pm (weather permitting). Curated by the DUMBO BID x Brooklyn Bridge Parents and supported by Leaf Medical & Leaf Dental in DUMBO. No need to RSVP, just show up.

Book of HOV Jay-Z’s life | Central Library Grand Army Plaza | Daily

The Book of HOV is a 40,000-square-foot exhibit at the Brooklyn Public Library Central about Jay-Z’s professional life with the front of the building wrapped with his lyrics, a Jazz Grant-crafted mural in the building’s atrium and six “zones” dedicated to the music icon’s career and legacy. It presents thousands of archived objects, including original recording masters, never-before-seen photos, iconic stage wear, prestigious awards and recognitions, as well as videos and artifacts from every facet on JAY-Z’s life. The exhibition follows library hours of operation MON–THURS 9AM–8PM, FRI–SAT 9AM–6PM and SUN 1PM–5PM. Find out more here.

Kayaking | Pier 4 | Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays & Sundays

Free family-friendly kayaking is offered throughout the summer on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, and Saturday and Sunday afternoons through September in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Find out more here.

Waterfront Walks | Brooklyn Bridge Park | Sundays

Free waterfront walks through Brooklyn Bridge Park to learn about the history of the Brooklyn waterfront and the park’s design.  All tours meet at Pier 1 entrance, weather permitting every Sunday at 10.30 am through October.
