Free kid-friendly events this week in Brooklyn (week 9/25-10/1)

Atlantic Antic with a first time ever Fun Zone by Mommy Poppins x Brooklyn Bridge Parents will take place on Sunday, October 1 across various neighborhoods, The Children’s Day of the Brooklyn Book Festival, Downtown Brooklyn Arts Festival and more festivals and block parties are taking place this week in Brooklyn.

Downtown Brooklyn Arts Festival | Downtown Brooklyn | Friday 9/29 & Saturday 9/30

The Downtown Brooklyn Arts Festival (DBAF) is an annual celebration of Downtown Brooklyn’s cultural community and the artists who inspire the borough’s creative spirit. DBAF 2023 will feature acclaimed arts organizations from across the Brooklyn Cultural District with performances and workshops at The Plaza at 300 Ashland. Family programming includes a Mark Morris Dance Group kids’ hip-hop dance and “petting zoo” presented by The Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. Friday, September 29 + Saturday, September 30. Brooklyn Book Festival Children’s Day | Brooklyn Commons | Saturday 9/30

With a Picture Book Stage, Young Reader’s Stage, Performance Stage, Workshop Room and a dedicated Makers & Creators corner, families enjoy a full day of readings, workshops, performances, book signings, and art projects with favorite authors and illustrators. Kids can also get their books signed. Plus, the whole family can find new favorite books at the Children’s Marketplace of Books. Van Alen Block Party | Gowanus | Saturday 9/30

Free and open to the public, their annual block party is a celebration of all things Gowanus – the vibrant, dynamic, and creative neighborhood they call home. On 9/30, join them outside of their Gowanus HQ for an afternoon of music, performance, and family-friendly crafts and games. 1 to 6PM at 303 Bond Street (rain date: Sunday, October 1). Open Streets on Montague Street | Brooklyn Heights | Saturday 9/30 – Cancelled

Free street games, music, adult cocktail area and more fun on car-free Montague Street from 12 to 6 pm. Circus and Blood Drive – Saturday, September 30th | 12:00PM – 5:00PM ( 1:00 pm for a performance by the phenomenal Bindlestiff Family Cirkus)

Atlantic Antic Fun Zone | Cobble Hill | Sunday 10/1

The largest street fest in New York City, the Atlantic Antic spans 10 blocks of Brooklyn’s Atlantic Avenue with food and craft vendors, family fun, and amazing performances. This year, for the first time, there is a Mommy Poppins & Brooklyn Bridge Parents Fun Zone sponsored by Prospect Schools between Hicks and Henry Streets in Cobble Hill near Brooklyn Bridge Park. The Fun Zone will be packed with FREE family-fun entertainment that includes MAJOR PLAY including squash, a cardboard maze, obstacle course, balloon twisting, freebies, arts & crafts, interactive games, rock painting and much more for kids of all ages—all activities in our fun zone will be free! Atlantic Antic will take place rain or shine on Sunday, October 1 from 12 to 6 pm. The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus will perform on the corner of Henry Street And Atlantic Avenue at 1, 3 and 5 pm, each show being 25 minutes long.

African Film Festival Family Day | Governors Island | Sunday 10/1

AFF’s annu­al Fam­i­ly Day Cel­e­bra­tion is back for its 16th edi­tion! Fun-seek­ing indi­vid­u­als of all ages are invit­ed for an enchant­i­ng day of free activ­i­ties includ­ing sto­ry­telling, dou­ble-dutch, dance and drum work­shops led by world-renowned instruc­tors, arts and crafts, and a selec­tion of short films, all cel­e­brat­ing Africa and the diaspora. Sunday, 12 to 6 pm on Governors Island.

Waterfront Walks | Brooklyn Bridge Park | Sundays

Free waterfront walks through Brooklyn Bridge Park to learn about the history of the Brooklyn waterfront and the park’s design.  All tours meet at Pier 1 entrance, weather permitting every Sunday at 10.30 am through October.
