Free kid-friendly events in Brooklyn this March

Spring is arriving, and March is filled with free events for families all over Brooklyn, including Holi celebrations, the Brooklyn Heights spring egg hunt and more spring fun.


Storytime at Jane’s Carousel | DUMBO

Thursdays, March 21 & 28 | 10:15-10:45am

Join Adam’s Street Library staff at Jane’s Carousel for Storytimes in March! They will be singing songs, learning rhymes and reading books together. Storytime will take place before the carousel is open from 10:15-10:45am on Thursday, March 21 and Thursday, March 28. No registration, but there will be a capacity limit.

HERstory with Flor Bromley | Brooklyn Children’s Museum | Crown Heights

Thursday, March 21 | 2-5pm

Celebrate Women’s History Month with this special performance by bilingual musician, Flor Bromley! HERstory is a musical one woman show about influential women of our generation.

Nature Storytime | Brooklyn Bridge Park Environmental Education Center | DUMBO

Thursday, March 21 | 3:00-3:30pm

Join for Nature Storytime at the Environmental Education Center! Librarians from Brooklyn Public Library Adams Street location lead for an exciting and engaging storytime session, along with singing and rhymes. Stick around after to check out all the animals and activities in the room during Open Hours! Walk-ups only; we do our utmost to accommodate as many walk-ups as space allows.

Myrtle Avenue Spring Scavenger Hunt | Fort Greene & Clinton Hill

Saturday, March 23 | 11am-1pm

Spring is only days away and to celebrate we are calling on all kid sleuths, detectives, and private eyes to join us for our free Spring Scavenger Hunt on Myrtle Avenue! After participants complete the hunt, they will receive a goodie bag full of candy and prizes, a free book from our partners at Brooklyn Book Bodega, and can enjoy the special interactive show: “Ain’t I a Woman: A Women’s History Game Show with Mélissa Smith” (12:30pm on the Myrtle Plaza (at Steuben Street)). Also enjoy Balloon Animals by Sparkly Faces and Girl Scout cookies!

Holi at the Seaport Museum | South Street Seaport

Saturday, March 23 | 11am–5pm

Immerse yourself in the vibrant spirit of Holi at the South Street Seaport community celebration. Enjoy free General Admission to the Seaport Museum to explore the introduction galleries at 12 Fulton Street and the historic ships at Pier 16 throughout the day. Explore foods of Holi at on the historic Wavertree ship, participate in a Holi collaborative mural, and more!

Babywearing Dance Fitness Class | Adams Street Library | DUMBO

Saturday, March 23, 11:30am-12:30pm

Dance and sway to international rhythms & familiar tunes while you TORCH calories and CUDDLE your baby! This is a FUN, easy-to-follow, dance fitness class that parents can do with their little ones (birth-3 years old) while snuggled safely into a baby carrier. Registration required!

Abracadabra! Magic Show | Central Library | Grand Army Plaza

Magic, laughter and fun will fill the air with Plaza’s highly-acclaimed interactive magic show! With a theatrical flair, audience members will laugh, stare with wonder, but above all – be fantastically entertained! Maybe the audience will even learn a few of the magician’s secrets!

Holi + Dhuleti Festival | Prospect Park

Join Prospect Park Alliance and Indian dance arts educator Aeilushi Misty for a celebration inspired by the spring festival of Holi. Join the fun-filled family friendly event to learn the significance of Holi and Dhuleti traditions and take part in the celebration with music, dance, art and more. Learn about the ceremonial offerings of Holika Dahan, create Rangoli motifs with vibrant flower petals, and sprinkle natural colored powder in the air to mark the spring and harvest seasons and celebrate the victory of good over evil. This event will be held at the Prospect Park Carousel Lawn area.

Celebrate Holi with Brooklyn Conservatory of Music | Prospect Park

Sunday, March 24 | 3-5pm

FREE entry, $6 for each colored powder packet

Join Mixed Masala and BKCM in celebrating Holi, the Festival of Colors, at Prospect Park! The celebration begins at 3pm with picnicking and live music at Long Meadow (near Grand Army Plaza). Bring a blanket and snacks and enjoy the free concert. At 4pm the music will change its tune and attendees will be invited to join in the traditional celebration of throwing colored powder. We recommend that you wear white clothing and expect to get messy! BKCM is selling colored powder for $6 per packet for families to pick up at the event. To ensure that your colored powder order is processed, purchase by Wednesday, March 20!

Stomp, Clap & Sing with Cara Samantha | Central Library | Grand Army Plaza

Clap, dance, sing, and party along with American Idol’s Cara Samantha and her magical musicians as they crawl their way into your hearts with a variety of pop, Motown, Disney, and family-favorite songs. For children 0-5 and their caregivers.

Easter Weekend School Holiday | Prospect Park

Friday, March 29 | 12-4pm

Join Prospect Park Alliance for nature education programs at the Prospect Park Audubon Center, the first urban Audubon Center in the nation.

  • Nature Around Us, 12 – 3 pm: Enjoy different seasonal discovery stations and nature themed activities that will introduce you to the plants, insects and animals that call the park home. The Lake and Lullwater are home to many plants and animals. Help us to test the water quality and investigate pond samples that are filled with living organisms.
  • Animal Encounter, 2 – 3 pm: Join Alliance Naturalists in learning more about the animals in the Audubon Center’s collection. This program starts promptly at 2 pm.
  • Wilderness Walk, 3 – 4 pm: Join the Prospect Park Alliance and learn about the Great Backyard Bird Count and search for your favorite “backyard bird”. Find woodpeckers, chickadees, and nuthatches eating from feeders along Prospect Park’s nature trails.

There will also be Carousel Rides from 12 – 5 pm! $3 per ride, $13 for a book of 5 tickets.

The Brooklyn Heights Annual Spring Egg Hunt | Pierrepont Playground | Brooklyn Heights

Saturday, March 30 | 11am-12pm

Hosted by the Brooklyn Heights Association, this annual egg hunt takes place at Pierrepont Playground, on the Brooklyn Promenade.

Seaport Kids x SPRINGTOPIA at The Seaport | South Street Seaport

FREE activities in the Plaza

With free activities like Hype Dance, face painting, spring wreath-making, egg races, and Easter Bunny selfies on Seaport Square, there’s plenty of afternoon activities to keep kids busy and spark their creative sides.

Governors Island Egg Hunt

Saturday, March 30 | 10am-3pm

Back for a second year, this pop­u­lar spring­time event will have 50,000 can­dy-filled eggs across sev­er­al areas of Gov­er­nors Island, along with an island-wide scav­enger hunt that everyone can take a crack at, plus an addi­tion­al hunt for chil­dren ages 5 and under. There will also be per­for­mances from Bub­bledad and Won­der­Spark Pup­pets, spring-themed arts and crafts with Red Hook Art Project, “Meet the Chick­ens” with Earth Mat­ter NY, family photos with a spring bunny, and more! The egg hunt is first come, first served as sup­plies last, and will take place con­tin­u­ous­ly through­out the day. No pre-reg­is­tra­tion is required, and the event is rain or shine. Note: heavy vis­i­tor traf­fic to Gov­er­nors Island is expected for the Egg Hunt; it is strong­ly rec­om­mend­ed that you reserve fer­ry tick­ets in advance!

Saturday Storytime | Adams Street Library | DUMBO

Join us for Saturday Storytime! We will spend 20-30 minutes singing, learning new rhymes and reading books together. Afterwards we will have time for a fun craft activity! This program is for ages 0-5 and their caregivers.


Easter Egg Hunt at Coffey Park | Red Hook

Join Redemption Church and the Red Hook community for games, music, giveaways, refreshments, and lots of eggs filled with goodies! There will be a special performance by DJ E NYC.

Hippity-Hop Easter Celebration with Dancewave | Atlantic Terminal Mall

Saturday, March 30 | 12-1:30pm

Join us for a high-energy, free hip hop dance class that’s perfect for dancers of all levels as we partner with Dancewave for a fun take on Easter celebrations this season. Join us for a free meet & greet and photos with the Easter bunny as well at Atlantic Terminal! This event is open to all ages and skill levels, so whether you’re a seasoned dancer or just starting out, come join us for a hopping good time! Costumes are encouraged, so feel free to dress in your Easter best or rock your favorite hip-hop gear.

Adventure Playground The Yard’s Opening Weekend | Governors Island

Opening Weekend is March 30 | 12-4pm

The Yard is NYC’s only adventure playground, located on Governors Island, and its opening weekend for the 2024 season is coming! The Yard is a kids-only space in which we supply young people with loose parts materials for building, exploring, imagining and destroying. Some tools provided are nails, hammers and saws, paint, tires, wood, fabrics and more. There are play:groundNYC trained playworkers inside The Yard when it is open to children. We have 2 areas at The Yard! Our family play area was available for kids under 5; our main play area is recommended for ages 5 to 19, and staffed by trained playworkers; we do not allow adults into the main area of The Yard, with the exception of the playworkers and the caregivers/parents of kids with special needs. Come early before the playground reaches capacity for the day!

Young Naturalists Session | Fort Greene Park

Saturday, March 30 | 12-1pm

Young Naturalists is a youth-led program for kids ages 5-13 to share and grow their knowledge about the world around them using Fort Greene Park as their open lab. Held biweekly from 12-1 p.m., kids can expect to participate in hands-on activities and experiments and learn from their fellow Young Naturalists.
