Free kid-friendly events this week in Brooklyn (10/28-11/3)

Halloween is here! This week is packed to the brim with spooky events for Brooklyn families. Make sure to also reference our Halloween Guide and our overview of the best trick-or-treating streets in Brooklyn. There are so many parties to choose from: DUMBOWEEN, the Cobble Hill Halloween Parade, bamBOO! at BAM, the Park Slope Halloween Parade, the Big Halloween Get Down in Brooklyn Bridge Park, and so many more. After October 31, there are still more holiday events celebrating Diwali and Día de Muertos, plus the NYC Marathon on Sunday.

Storytime with Suzy Ultman: I Like Your Chutzpah at Books Are Magic | Brooklyn Heights

The first in a stylish, current, and multifaceted series of Jewish-themed board books for curious young readers. This modern and whimsical Jewish-themed board book series is the first of its kind incorporating both Jewish traditions and Jewish culture, offering a unique depiction of Judaism. Come one, come all and join us for a fun filled, silly yet spookylicious Halloween event with our very Own Hype Girl “Bubbles”. Children and grownups will dance, sing and laugh alongside Bubbles and her crazy adventures. In addition to this interactive live performance, we will have a Halloween craft table. Come hang out, get crafty, make friends, and get in the Halloween spirit! We can’t wait to see you there! This event is for all ages and does not require registration.

Take advantage of free admission hours at the New York Aquarium in Coney Island, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesdays. There’s so much to do while you’re in Coney Island; check out our guide to planning a day trip to Coney IslandNote that advance timed tickets are required; the Wednesday Afternoon Ticket Store will open on Monday at 3:00 pm for that Wednesday’s reservations. CityParks Puppetmobile presents Cinderella Samba at McCarren Park House | Williamsburg

Cinderella Samba takes place in the lush landscape of Brazil, where, thanks to the help of her fairy godmother, Cinderella attends Rio de Janeiro’s biggest Carnaval gala and dances the samba with Prince Paulo. The lively production features an original commissioned musical soundtrack that brings samba center-stage; handcrafted Carnaval festival floats on parade; and one-of-a-kind marionettes donning their most vibrant celebration costumes, created by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre in Central Park.

Storytime at Jane’s Carousel | DUMBO

Join the Adam’s Street children’s librarian at Jane’s Carousel for Storytime’s in October and November! We will be singing songs, learning rhymes and reading books together. Storytime will take place before the carousel is open from 10:15-10:45AM every Thursday through 11/14. No registration, but there will be a capacity limit.

Amazon Free Hours at Brooklyn Children’s Museum | Crown Heights

Join us during Amazon Free Hours, every Thursday afternoon from 2-5pm! Explore some of our most-loved exhibits, including toddler-favorite Totally Tots, the miniature shops of World Brooklyn, our rooftop kids’ climber, and more. Then check out ColorLab, our family art studio located on the 2nd floor of the Museum, where artists of all ages can explore, make, and celebrate art. We recommend reserving your tickets in advance online. Walk-ins always welcome.

Halloween at Berry Street Garden | Williamsburg

Come to Berry Street Garden where the garden group will have their fun annual Halloween celebration for families! Each planting bed has a different Halloween theme. The garden will have a child friendly spooky theme at the front part of the garden with lots of Halloween Inflatable characters. There will also be some upgraded animated characters. A spookier theme will be located in the back part of the garden for older kids and adults. There will be treats for all kids, young and old!

McGhoulrick Halloween | Greenpoint

Join Friends of McGolrick Park for their annual Halloween celebration in Greenpoint. There will be games, dancing, candy, and a children’s parade!

5th Annual Halloween Costume Crawl for All | Williamsburg

DUMBOWEEN | DUMBO

Thursday, October 31 | 4-7pm

One of our favorite neighborhood traditions, DUMBOWEEN brings hundreds of costumed Dumbonians out for our Annual March to the Arch through Brooklyn Bridge Park with brass bands + puppets, followed an Archway Party featuring crafts with Creatively WILD Art Studio, a photobooth and of course, candy! Plus, Trick-or-Treat at 50 + Dumbo small businesses around the neighborhood!

  • 4pm | March to the Arch | Gather on Washington Street between Front and Water Streets. Parade through DUMBO en route to the Dumbo Archway, led by live music and puppets!
  • 4-7pm | Trick or Treat in Dumbo | It’s a neighborhood-wide tradition! 50+ small businesses hand out candy on Halloween from 3-7pm (while supplies last.) Look for the pumpkin sign in the window of participating locations. Get the map here!
  • 4:30-7pm | Dumbo Archway Party | Hands-on fun with Creatively WILD Art Studio, a spooktacular photobooth, live music, prizes for the best (human!) costumes, drinks for sale from The Archway Bar – and of course, lots of candy!
  • 5pm | Howl-O-Ween | Deck out your four-legged friend and come to **Washington Street** for the second annual Dumbo x H.E.A.L Howl-O-Ween! Prizes for  (1) Most original, (2) Best Owner/pet duo and (3) Best in show/Cutest/Coolest. Win an Apple Watch and lots of of other great prizes. Birds, cats, alligators also welcome!
  • All weekend! | Photo Fun for Everyone! | We’re creating festive photo experiences, perfect for showing off that creepy costume or commemorating a day in Dumbo. Find them on Washington Street and in the Dumbo Archway Thursday October 26 through Tuesday October 31.

Boo!KCM Halloween Celebration | Park Slope

BKCM’s free, family-friendly Halloween garden party in Park Slope is back! Some have speculated that our 143-year-old Victorian mansion may be haunted. We can neither confirm nor deny these rumors, but we CAN confirm that some talented musical spirits will be giving a spine-chilling performance in the garden, and that the candy will be plentiful and frightfully delicious. Cobble Hill Halloween Parade | Cobble Hill

Organized by the Cobble Hill Association, the Cobble Hill Halloween Parade is always on Halloween, rain or shine. This year’s parade will once again be led by the incomparable Brass Queens. Music starts in Cobble Hill Park at 3:30pm, and the parade leaves from the Congress Street entrance exactly at 4pm. After the parade, stick around for some of the best trick-or-treating in Brooklyn!

Unleash your inner monster at Myrtle Avenue’s hair-raising, spooktacular Monster Mash at the Myrtle Avenue Plaza. Get your ghoul on with DJ Des One’s eerie tracks, marvel at Dancer Keller’s solo Thriller showcase, and learn killer moves from Mr. Chung. Then, join forces with PS20 Dancers for a chilling Thriller Dance Mob that’ll wake the dead! Cap off the night with a bone-shaking dance battle while enjoying spooky games & sweet treats throughout this Halloween spectacular — guaranteed to be a monster hit! Costumes are encouraged but not required – just bring your Halloween spirit! Park Slope Halloween Parade | Park Slope

Dress up in your best costume and join in the annual Park Slope Civic Council Halloween Parade! The parade begins at 14th Street and 7th Avenue, then heads north on 7th Avenue, turning left on 3rd Street and ending in J.J. Byrne Playground at the Old Stone House.

CSI Clinton Hill: A Halloween Mystery at the Library at Clinton Hill Library

Thursday, October 31 | 5:00-7:30pm | Ages 12+

Interested in working a crime scene and solving a mystery? Take on the role of a witness (or suspect!) in this Halloween murder mystery and deduce who did the crime and why. Team up to process evidence from a mock crime scene and maybe you can solve the case! Please register at the front desk before attending. Ages 12+ only, please. For up to 21 players.

Big Halloween Get Down | Brooklyn Bridge Park

Join Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy for their first-ever Big Halloween Get Down dance party with Sounds from Herbert Holler! This is a free, all-ages event at Pier 3 Plaza. Bring your good vibes and your best moves! Doors open at 6:00 PM and the dance party starts at 7:00 PM. RSVPso we know you’re coming! This is an all-ages event, but youth under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Diwali Celebration at the Seaport Museum | South Street Seaport

Join the Seaport Museum and The Culture Tree for a full day of free Seaport Museum admission and festive activities to celebrate Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. Step aboard the Seaport Museum’s 1885 tall ship Wavertree for hands-on Diwali fun! Create your own baggywrinkle decoration inspired by marigold garlands, a symbol of good fortune and faith, but with a maritime twist. Plus, decorate your own “diya lamp”—or in this case, a candle—and float it in a special pool on deck, symbolizing prosperity for the new year. The Museum is staying open one hour later so that you can enjoy the glow of your diya lamp after sunset. From 4pm to 6pm, enjoy Diwali Puppet Storytime on Wavertree, where we’ll explore the significance and origins of Diwali and how it’s celebrated worldwide. We’ll also read stories like A Kids Book About Diwali, perfect for children and families. Following Storytime, dive into an interactive dance workshop where you’ll learn mudras (hand gestures) from classical Indian dance and groove to popular Diwali songs in a lively performance!

Day of the Dead Family Celebration at Green-Wood Cemetery | South Slope

Discover the rich history and traditions associated with the holiday Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) through family-friendly crafts, performances, music, activities, and food. Celebrated throughout Latin America from October 31st to November 2nd, this holiday is a time for family and friends to commemorate departed loved ones through prayer, altars, music, and dance. Free. Registration recommended to receive updates about the event. Walk-ins are welcomed. No admittance after 5:30pm.

Story and Craft: Celebrate Diwali at Central Library | Prospect Heights

Join us to share the joy of Diwali, the Festival of Lights celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs worldwide! Diwali (also known as Deepavali) symbolizes the victory of light over darkness,  good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance, making it a festival of joy, positivity, and togetherness.
At the event families and children of all ages will enjoy:
  • a Diwali storytime (in the Youth Wing Upper Program Room)
  • Indian music, as well as a short Indian dance lesson (in the Youth Wing Upper Program Room)
  • Making Rangoli (designs with chalk and colored sand) outdoors in the Children’s Garden Courtyard

Registration is recommended, but walk-ins may be permitted based on space availability. Recommended for families with children of all ages, but most appropriate for ages 4 and up.

Cheer on NYC Marathon runners as they embark on their 26.2-mile challenge starting at the Verrazano Bridge. Stake out a front row cheer spot or bounce around these Brooklyn neighborhood favorites:

  • Mile 8 Cheering Station at 300 Ashland in Downtown Brooklyn | 9am-1:30pm | Come to The Plaza at 300 Ashland to cheer on the runners! They will be giving away cowbells and free coffee, and Batalá and L Train Brass Band will be performing from 9:00-11:30am.
  • Lafayette Avenue in Clinton Hill | 8am-12pm | Come cheer at #FABMile8 at Fowler Square (Fulton and Lafayette) on Marathon Sunday! Bring a warm coat donation, as they’ll be kicking off their New York Cares coat drive!

Brooklyn Pop-Up Market | Brooklyn Museum

Family Day at Barcade | Williamsburg

Join us for Family Day in Brooklyn! From 12-5pm on the first Sunday of each month, bring the family out for some classic arcade games and pinball! As this location doesn’t have a kitchen, feel free to bring a lunch! We also have snacks available for purchase. All children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Nature Walk with Naturalist Russell Jacbos in Domino Park | Williamsburg

Sunday, November 3 | 1-3pm

Join naturalist Russell Jacobs on a nature walk across Domino Park. Learn about the natural history of the Brooklyn waterfront, the ongoing environmental restoration work at Domino Park, and how to identify migrating songbirds and waterfowl. The group will meet at Domino Square.
