Thanksgiving week is here! This week our roundup of family-friendly events in Brooklyn includes plenty of volunteer opportunities, nature programs in our local parks, and free ice skating sessions in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Plus, the first tree lightings of the holiday season are upon us, including Downtown Brooklyn Gets Lit! in Albee Square, the Atlantic Avenue Tree Lighting in Boerum Hill, and the Park Slope Tree Lighting on 5th Avenue.

This year, One Community’s Fresh Pantries Team will distribute over 1,860 Thanksgiving meals to families in need in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill! Just $20 gives a family a beautiful Thanksgiving. You can also join their team of volunteers to pack up meals at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, distribute food at pantry sites, or deliver meals door-to-door!
This holiday season, you can “adopt a family” with the Red Hook Art Project, providing a full-course holiday meal complete with dessert and drinks delivered to their doorstep the day before or the day of the holiday.

CHiPS Soup Kitchen is once again hosting a special Thanksgiving meal this year, and will be accepting homemade or store-bought dishes to be dropped off the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Sign up here to contribute a dish (or two! or three!). They will also be distributing socks, hats, gloves, scarves, sweatshirts, and sweatpants to guests on Thanksgiving Day, and will accept new items between now and Wednesday, November 26. You can drop off at 200 4th Avenue between 9am and 2pm daily.

Downtown Brooklyn Gets Lit! | Downtown Brooklyn

Albee Square in Downtown Brooklyn will host its annual holiday lighting ceremony. DJ Mike Doelo will provide music, and performances will include Janis Weatherly and members of The Lafayette Inspirational Ensemble, along with entertainers Andrea Flow, Brianna Kalisch, Flow Juggle, and Roller Boogie. Attendees can enjoy hot chocolate and participate in a countdown to turn on the holiday lights. Plus, an ugly sweater contest will take place leading up to the event! Participants can post a photo in an ugly sweater on Instagram, tag @downtownbrooklyn, and bring their post to the DTBK tent between 6-7pm on the day of the event to receive a gift card for a local business, while supplies last.
Atlantic Avenue Tree Lighting | Boerum Hill

Save the date for Atlantic Avenue’s annual tree lighting outside St. Cyril of Turov Belarusian Church. In past years the festivities in Boerum Hill have included caroling, goodie bags, and more holiday cheer!

Take advantage of free admission hours at the New York Aquarium form 3-6pm on Wednesdays. Note that advance timed tickets are required (max of 4 per group); the Wednesday Afternoon Ticket Store will open on Monday at 3:00 pm for that Wednesday’s reservations.

Every Thanksgiving morning, volunteers with God’s Love We Deliver bring festive Thanksgiving meals and gift totes to homebound clients. Families who have their own vehicle can sign up to deliver meals to clients, typically 6-8 households. On the morning November 27, volunteers will pick up meals from Brooklyn distribution centers and drive to various homes to deliver them.

Visit the Environmental Education Center for Open Hours. Open Hours offer the opportunity for self-led investigation with guidance by expert educators to reveal the hidden stories found within and around Brooklyn Bridge Park. Explore our critter and fish tanks, a 10′ model of the Park, and enjoy custom arts, crafts, and reading materials which rotate on a monthly basis.

parkrun is a free, worldwide, weekly event where people of all ages and abilities walk, jog, run, or volunteer in a 5k event on Saturday mornings–in Brooklyn, you can join every week in Brooklyn Bridge Park! Families register online and receive a barcode which will record their time. All ages are welcome, and there is a coffee and catch-up after each run!

Come by your local Home Depot on the first Saturday of each month for a free kids workshop! All tools and materials needed to complete the Workshop will be available, and a Home Depot Associate will be there to assist families as necessary.
