Free kid-friendly events this week in Brooklyn (12/2-12/8)

December is here, and this week is packed with family-friendly events to kick off the holiday season, including tree lightings, holiday markets, and free ice skating! More highlights of the week include the Santa Portrait Studio at City Point, family fun at the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s Wallabout Wonderland Holiday Market, BRIC’s Winter Wonderland in Downtown Brooklyn, festive holiday windows on Atlantic Avenue and a party with Santa at Hoyt Street Garden, the annual St. Nicholas Day celebration at the Wyckoff Farmhouse Museum, and so much more.

Ready, Set, Kindergarten at Central Library | Prospect Heights

In this special six-session series, families enjoy stories & activities designed to encourage the development of early learning practices. Exploring literacy, science & math through music, stories, art & play will help you and your child get ready for school! Families will receive free materials to continue the learning and fun at home. Free Skating for Brooklyn Residents at Roebling Rink | Brooklyn Bridge Park

Roebling Rink is opening under the Brooklyn Bridge on Monday, November 25! Take advantage of the first free skating sessions for Brooklyn residents: Monday, November 25 from 5-6pm and Sunday, December 1 from 10-11am. Tickets for the free sessions are first-come, first-served and must be booked in person with a valid Brooklyn address on your ID.

Stomp, Clap, and Sing with Suzi Shelton at Cental Library Plaza | Prospect Heights

With over a decade of experience, Suzi Shelton creates music that is both uplifting and fun, encouraging little ones to sing, dance, and explore the world around them. Her songs are filled with playful melodies and positive messages such as “Spread More Love,” and “Go Fire Truck Go,” making her a beloved figure among families who seek heartwarming and interactive musical experiences. Suzi released two family albums this year, and is always working on new material for families. For this show, Suzi will be joined by guitarist Jeff Litman and singer/songwriter Sara Ptak.

Come into the Park Slope Library and create a take-home craft with us! In today’s kids create, Mr Johnny will tell us about the Peace Post, an interactive customizable exhibit featuring a collection of 198 portraits of peace, environmental, and human rights advocates from every country in the world. It was created as an educational resource by Selman, the project showcases the work of over 100 global artists. We’ll discuss age-appropriate peace advocates, including people who might be in our community. Everyone will get a chance to draw their own advocates! For kids 6 and up. Join us during Amazon Free Hours, every Thursday afternoon from 2-5pm! Explore some of our most-loved exhibits, including toddler-favorite Totally Tots, the miniature shops of World Brooklyn, the new In the Works play space that is modeled after NYC scaffolding, and more. Then check out ColorLab, our family art studio located on the 2nd floor of the Museum, where artists of all ages can explore, make, and celebrate art. This Thursday, December 5, meet artist Emily Manwaring and make shoe sculptures inspired by her mixed-media artwork. We will use paper, tempera sticks, tulle, and jewels to create dazzling kicks fit for a celebration! (RSVP here). During Amazon Free Hours, there is also Animal Encounters with live animals at 3:00 and 3:45pm. And finally, check out Nature’s Engineers, the museum’s STEM makerspace, from 2:30 to 4:30pm. Introduction to Birdwatching Outings | Prospect Park

Whether you’re just starting out or have already joined the birding ranks, this introductory outing is for you! Every Saturday, join Prospect Park Alliance and a member of the Brooklyn Bird Club on an introductory walk to learn the basics of birding and search for the dozens of species that visit Prospect Park through all seasons. All levels are welcome and walks will begin at the Prospect Park Audubon Center. No registration necessary. Please bring binoculars if you have them! Route Description: This outing is at a leisurely pace with lots of stops to observe birds. A different route through the park may be taken each week. There may be steps, slight inclines, and grass and dirt paths with exposed roots. We will cover approximately 1.5-2 miles.

Join Prospect Park Alliance, the Eenda-Lunaapeewahkiing Collective and the American Indian Community House for a curated weekend of Lenape and other Indigenous performances and craft vendors. Experience Indigenous music, dance, food and crafts on the ancestral homelands of the Lenape peoples.Hosting an Art and Craft fair in Prospect Park offers Lenape and other Indigenous artists and artisans from across the region an opportunity to share their cultures with Brooklynites of all backgrounds today. This December, FAD Market will present its largest holiday market series to date, showcasing the best of New York City’s independent makers, artisans, and designers. Holiday markets are coming to The Invisible Dog Center in Boerum Hill, St. Paul’s in Cobble Hill, and Empire Stores in DUMBO. Over the course of three weekends leading up to Christmas – December 7+8, 14+15, and 21+22 – FAD Market will feature a weekly lineup of 150 talented makers, offering one-of-a-kind holiday gifts ranging from jewelry, apparel, and home decor to artisanal foods. The holiday markets will also include fun attractions such as a holiday photo booth, live portrait artists, and exclusive giveaways, making it the ultimate holiday shopping destination for the season. FAD Market is free and open to the public. Pets are also welcome!

Serve at CHiPS Soup Kitchen | Park Slope

Join us at the TSC Treat Stand! Lunch guests at the CHiPS soup kitchen on 4th Avenue love to get something a bit extra with their meal, especially the warm greetings and smiles from our youth volunteers. Volunteers will be asked to bake at home or buy hearty snacks and bring them to serve at our treat stand. Each volunteer is required to bring enough food to feed 50 guests. Some favorite treats include bags of fruit, trail mix, banana bread, muffins, cookies, granola bars. We will also have water and coffee. This volunteer project is for youth 8+ and is drop off only.

The free event will be held from 12 to 3 p.m. at the Hoyt Street Garden, corner of Atlantic Avenue and Hoyt Street. Children are invited to decorate the fences of the local community garden with DIY ornaments or bring them from home. Santa and Olaf will be there to take pictures and spread holiday cheer!

The Coolest Santa EVER is located at Santa Land in the Atlantic Terminal Mall, downstairs by DSW! Santa Land has been a staple in the community for over 15 years! The 5th Annual  Santa Land Parade will kick off at Washington/Atlantic Avenue, traveling on Washington Ave. to Eastern Parkway to Vanderbilt to Atlantic. The parade will end at Atlantic Avenue Terminal Mall.

Stop by the Family Corner presented by Brooklyn Bridge Parents from 12-4pm, with free magic shows from 2-3pm each day, cookie decorating, holiday crafts, story times, LEGO adventures, and book giveaways, while supplies last. The Holiday Market will be open from 12 to 5pm on Saturday & Sunday. Winter Tree Tour | Governors Island

22nd Annual Sinterklaas: Saint Nicholas Day at Wyckoff House Museum | Canarsie

Join us for our 22nd Annual Sinterklaas St. Nicholas Day Celebration. It will be a fun-filled day of craft activities, tree lighting, and a special visit from St. Nick. Children will enjoy a visit from St. Nicholas as he arrives on horseback around 2:30 PM. St. Nicholas will tell the traditional tale of The Bakers Dozen and children are invited to sign the Red Book. Sip hot cider, try your hand at colonial games, create a holiday pomander, decorate a Dutch clog for Sinterklaas, and dress the tree for the tree lighting that will close the day as the sun goes down. Step into BRIC’s Winter Wonderland on December 8! BRIC House unveils a wintry realm brimming with family fun, where art, music, dance, and interactive media weave a magical tapestry. Come join us for a cozy cup of hot chocolate, live musical performances, and festive artmaking activities. Design a luminous snowflake lantern, write a special holiday message or paint a wintery watercolor landscape to give someone special, and test your building skills in our family Gingerbread House Competition.
