Free kid-friendly events this week in Brooklyn (2/17-2/23)

Winter break is here, and we’ve got a fantastic lineup of free activities for kids during their time off! The Urban Park Rangers and Prospect Park Alliance are hosting nature programs all week long, and there are plenty of storytimes, free concerts, movie nights, and volunteer opportunities for teens in our community. Take advantage of free admission to the Black Future Festival at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum on Wednesday, and celebrate the legacy of Shirley Chishom with a superhero cape workshop at the Lefferts Historic House in Prospect Park. For even more fun, check out our complete guide to winter break activities for families in Brooklyn and beyond!

Join Prospect Park Alliance for nature education programs for Mid-Winter Recess at the Prospect Park Audubon Center, the first urban Audubon Center in the nation. There will be nature discovery stations, a chance to meet live animals, and a winter wilderness walk.

Aviva and Friends Presents: Toddlers in Rhythm at Time Out Market | DUMBO

In this movement workshop for parents/caretakers and their little ones, we will explore the fundamentals of rhythm and movement, using the lens of African Dance. Listening to the beat of the drum, participants and their parents will explore their range of movement and feel how the rhythm moves them to their core! We will use rhythm and stories to bridge the distance between us and keep on moving to a connected beat. This program will be on the 5th floor event space. Registration will open 72hrs in advance of the program.

The Service Collective is looking for volunteers to serve food to our neighbors! On a busy day, our local soup kitchen CHiPS at 200 4th Avenue feeds 200+ people for breakfast and 400+ people for lunch. Together we will make 200+ sandwiches and 100+ breakfast cups at St. Ann & the Holy Trinity in Brooklyn Heights. Then we will hop on the train and set up and serve during lunch service.

We are so excited to be partnering with Time Out Market at 55 Water Street while Adams Street is closed to bring DUMBO toddlers weekly story times! Rangers will demonstrate how to properly start a fire without matches, and give kids a chance to try themselves. Rangers will also be teaching shelter building and will provide materials for children to practice.

SlimeFest at Williamsburgh Library| Williamsburg

We’re going to spend an afternoon getting our hands sticky. At SlimeFest you can come in and make as much slime as you want! We’ll have a variety of add-ins and fixings. Add glitter, colors and more to create different types of slime. Ages 3 years and up.

Take advantage of free admission hours at the New York Aquarium in Coney Island, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesdays. Special this week for Mid-Winter Break: check out the Touch Pool, where guests of all ages can meet local marine invertebrates, including crabs, marine snails and horseshoe crabs. The Touch Pool will be open during the school holiday (February 17-21) from 11:30am-3:30pm and is included with admission to New York Aquarium. Note that advance timed tickets are required; the Wednesday Afternoon Ticket Store will open on Monday at 3:00 pm for that Wednesday’s reservations. Do not come to the aquarium without a reserved ticket! There’s a maximum of 4 tickets per order.

  • 2:30-4:30pm | Cool by Design in Nature’s Engineers | Discover the science of keeping spaces cool in our STEM makerspace! Design and build your own shade structure using textiles, then put your engineering skills to the test: Can your creation protect an ice cube from melting?
  • 2:30-4:30pm | “I See You”: Workshop with Artist Larry Brown | Meet the artist behind our Future Reflections project! Join Larry Brown in ColorLab as he guides you in creating your own reflective sculptures inspired by his “I See You” series. Using reflective paper, air-dry clay, beads, and twine, design mixed-media artworks while learning directly from the artist about his creative process and vision.
  • 4:00-4:45pm | My Community Looks Like… | Rep’ your ‘hood through paper collage! Use a variety of multi-colored, multi-patterned, and multi-textured paper to represent who and what makes up your community. Add an instant photo of yourself to draw a personal connection to the place you call home. Participants may choose to take their collages with them or add them to a larger collective collage that will represent the community that attends the workshop that day. Each month they select a book to pair with the Education Center’s monthly nature theme. Stick around after to check out all the animals and activities in the room during Open Hours! Volunteers will work alongside Service Collective staff to manage the compost turning and layering process at the Columbia Street Farm. Tasks may also include raking site maintenance and other farm duties. The farm work often includes moving objects around the site and working close to ground for extended periods of time.

Black History Month Celebration: Architecture of the Harlem Renaissance at The Skyscraper Museum | Lower Manhattan

The Harlem Renaissance was a period of cultural rejuvenation for Black communities in New York, giving rise to literary, artistic, and social movements that advocated for challenging segregation and for the adoption of civil rights. Join us for this children’s program to learn how these developments, including jazz poetry and musical theater, were reflected by Harlem’s architecture then and now. We’ll also create collages using cutouts of New York buildings, art pieces and literature from the Renaissance. All ages welcome!

February Family Activity: Valentine Like a Sailor | South Street Seaport

Bring 19th century maritime craft tradition to your handmade valentine with the Seaport Museum! While you create your own special trinket for the holiday, learn about the unique history of Sailors’ Valentines—tokens of love and friendship. Historically, these small wooden boxes were given by seafarers to their wives, sweethearts, daughters, and loved ones when they returned from a long voyage. Using beads, buttons, and shells, families and friends of all ages are invited to the Seaport Museum where we’ll continue the tradition together. Supplies are available on a first-come first-served basis, and space is limited. This family activity will be offered Saturdays and Sundays from February 2 through February 23. The activity will take place indoors at 207 Water Street.

Annual 90-Second Newbery Film Festival at Central Library | Prospect Heights

Check out the 14th annual 90-Second Newbery Film Festival—a yearly video contest in which kid filmmakers create weird short movies that tell the entire stories of Newbery award-winning books in about 90 seconds. The screening is hosted by children’s author James Kennedy (The Order of Odd-Fish) and Newbery Honor winner Rita Williams-Garcia (One Crazy Summer and more). The festival takes place at Central Library in Grand Army Plaza.

Calling all of our smallest Brooklyn friends! Macaroni KID Brooklyn NW has teamed up with Time Out Market New York to schedule more free concerts for toddlers and babies! If you’ve never been to a Suzi Shelton concert, you are in for a treat! With over a decade of experience, Suzi creates music that is both uplifting and fun, encouraging little ones to sing, dance, and explore the world around them. As a true happiness-maker, Suzi’s performances are infused with charm and energy, leaving her young audience (and their grownups) smiling and inspired. For the youngest audience members, Suzi uses props such as books, egg shakers, dancing scarves, and special “friends” like Grey Squirrel, Snowy the Owl or her beloved Cinnamon Bear. Shows end with a disco dance party, bubbles, free stickers and lots of hugs!

Readers will journey into a forest, listen carefully to its sounds, and observe the creatures that call it home.

Shirley Chisholm Superhero Cape and Resiliency Workshops at Lefferts Historic House | Prospect Park

Join for a family-friendly event for all ages at the Lefferts Historic House to create and showcase superhero capes inspired by the legacy of Shirley Chisholm. Bring scraps of fabric or make use of fabric we provide to decorate your own superhero cape! The interactive all-ages community workshop, Cultivating Resilience Through Self-Compassion, will begin at 2pm and is designed to help you navigate fear and uncertainty. Through guided activities tailored for each age group, you will map the physiological signs of stress and joy in your body, identifying what triggers these feelings and what restores balance.
