Free kid-friendly events this week in Brooklyn

Our weekly overview of events and things-to-do for families in Brooklyn is out! Highlights this week are the Children’s Day at the Brooklyn Book Festival, dance performances by Mark Morris Dance Group in Brooklyn Bridge Park, last Amal appearances, an Oktoberfest party for families and the Atlantic Antic street fair.

Downtown Brooklyn Arts Festival | The Plaza at 300 Ashland | 9/30 & 10/1

Dance parties, dance classes, story time and live music performances during the Downtown Brooklyn Arts Festival. Friday 4 to 8 pm, Saturday 11 am to 7 pm. Full line up here.

Stargazing | Brooklyn Bridge Park | Friday 9/30

Join Amateur Astronomers Association of New York as they set up high-powered telescopes to observe the moon, stars, and distant planets from the Pier 1 promenade on Friday night! Walk-up and weather-permitting. Friday September 23 from 8 to 10 pm.

Brooklyn Book Festival Children’s Day | Downtown Brooklyn | Saturday 10/1

The Brooklyn Book Festival Children’s Day features an exciting lineup of authors, illustrators, workshops and activities for kids ages 2 to 11, with day-long Picture Book and Young Readers stages, performances, spirited illustrator competitions, bookmaking, Olympian costume making workshop, banned book discussion, performances, bilingual programs and more. The author of the Wings of Fire series and the author of the Olympians series will be there for interactive activities and readings (just to name two of the many others participating). Full line-up here. The free event will take place on Saturday, October 1, from 10 am to 4 pm at Bklyn Commons in Downtown Brooklyn – rain or shine. Brooklyn Bridge Parents will offer Lego and block building for children of all ages during the Brooklyn Book Festival Children’s Day from 12 to 3 pm. Whether it is a bridge, skyscraper, ball track or school – come build, play and laugh with us!

Mark Morris Dance Group performances and Workshop | Brooklyn Bridge Park | 10/1

Mark Morris Dance Group returns to Brooklyn Park Bridge, with two showings of an outdoor performance and an all-ages family-friendly workshop at Pier 1 Harbor View Lawn on Saturday, October 1. Performances will take place at 2pm and 4pm, with the workshop held in between at 3pm. The repertoire for both performances will include: WaterGreek To MeOrfeo ed Euridice (excerpts from a larger Opera), and Dancing Honeymoon (excerpts).

Adopt-A-Pet | Downtown Brooklyn | 10/1

“Adopt-A-Pet” on Saturday, October 1, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Come to Borough Hall Plaza for a collaboration with the Animal Care Centers of NYC and other partners to help find new homes for some lovable cats and dogs. Foster options are available as well!

Atlantic Antic | Boerum Hill & Brooklyn Heights | Sunday 10/2

Brooklyn’s oldest street fair will take place on Sunday 10/2 from 12 to 6 pm rain or shine. Some of the highlights will be a kids’ block with pony rides, bounce houses, face painting and circus performers; tastings from the many diverse Atlantic Avenue restaurants; and offerings from the Avenue’s fashion, craft, home and other shops that make Atlantic Avenue so special.

DUMBO Family Games | DUMBO | Sunday 10/2 – cancelled

Join us for DUMBO Family Game Time on Sundays until 10/30 from 10 am to 12 pm on pedestrian-only Washington Street with free games for kids 1 to 10!

The 8th Annual Blocktoberfest | Downtown Brooklyn | SUNDAY 10/2

Quench your thirst with German Beer, fill your bellies with Bratwurst and Sauerkraut, and let the kids slide down…a giant inflatable slide. Insane lineup of music, DJs and fun! Find out more here. OCTOBER 2nd from 12 to 5 pm on Hanson Place in Downtown Brooklyn. Rain or Shine.
