Free kid-friendly events this week in Brooklyn (4/7-4/13)

Spring has sprung, and Brooklyn is bursting with free, family-friendly events this week! There’s no shortage of outdoor activities, from Tot Time at Marsha P. Johnson State Park to Stroller Walks in Prospect Park, the Young Naturalists program in Fort Greene Park, and playtime at The Yard adventure playground on Governors Island. Easter is also just around the corner, bringing a variety of egg hunts and opportunities to meet the Easter Bunny. And with Earth Day approaching, kids and teens can help out with park cleanups at spots like Prospect Park and Bushwick Inlet Park in Williamsburg.

Are gay penguins in a children’s book “appropriate” for a kindergarten classroom? What, and who, gets to be a part of the history of the United States? Through a series of interactive theatrical vignettes and embodied discussions, [BLEEP]: A Play About Censorsh** investigates how censorship shows up in the American education system while taking a look at the effect it has on our personal lives and the world at large. Where is censorship happening? Why is it happening? Who gets to draw the line and why? Where would you draw the line? [BLEEP] takes a hard look at the topic of censorship in a captivating, exciting, and often silly way, allowing participants to grapple with these tough questions through the joy of theatre. Doors open at 5:30 pm and the show begins at 6 pm. Snacks and drinks will be served after the performance. Registration is not required but is recommended. This program is for tweens, teens and young adults over the age of 11.

Young Naturalists is a youth-led program for kids ages 5-13 to share and grow their knowledge about the world around them using Fort Greene Park as their open lab. Held biweekly from 12-1 p.m., with sessions ranging from bird identification and recycling minigames, to sharing all sorts of knowledge with one another, kids can expect to participate in hands-on activities and experiments and learn from their fellow Young Naturalists. Come lend a hand weeding, mulching and planting the garden beds in BIP’s 50 Kent Ave section. We have tools and gloves (but bring yours if you have them)! Hosted by the Brooklyn Heights Association, this annual egg hunt is very popular! This year, little bunnies 3 years and younger should report to Harry Chapin playground and children 4 years and older should head to Pierrepont Playground as usual. Families with children in both age groups can choose which hunt to attend. The Egg Hunt begins at 10:30am SHARP! If you miss the eggs, you can still celebrate with our bake sale! Proceeds from the bakesale help fund the egg hunt and many other BHA community activities. Sign up here to contribute baked goods or work a one-hour volunteer shift. We would appreciate as many baked goods and volunteers as possible!

Historic New York: Jackie Robinson’s Brooklyn Legacy | Prospect Park

Join the Urban Park Rangers in a walking tour from Prospect Park to the historic location of Ebbets field. Learn about the roots of baseball in Brooklyn and the significance of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in baseball in April of 1947.

Ari the Sing Along Guy at Randolph’s Lil’ Brunch Club | DUMBO

Randolph is excited to host a new Lil’ Brunch Club on Sundays with a kids menu, cartoons on the TV screens, music for kids, arcade and claw games, a cotton candy robot, play room toys, and a menu and adult beverages for the parents. Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park, celebrating its 105th season in Coney Island, will kick off the season on Sunday, April 13 with its 40th Annual “Blessing of the Rides” at 10am. Following the blessing, the first 105 guests riding the iconic Wonder Wheel for free! The amusement park also has many kiddie rides, which will open at 11am, with adult rides opening at 12pm. Deno’s will be open on weekends only through May 18, then daily from May 23 through September 3, and on weekends and holidays from September 6 through October 26.
